A Kentucky mother recently got into a heated confrontation with a school principal after being denied the ability to pick up her special-needs son for a dental appointment. The parent, who posts content under the name Authentitax on Instagram and Mastermindmybiz on TikTok, recorded the interaction when the Louisville Jefferson County Public Schools principal refused to release her child because it was too close to the official school dismissal time.
The video racked up over 300,000 views as the platforms debated the balance between school policy and parental rights. In the video, the TikToker called the principal over and then explained, “This gentleman just told me I can’t get my son for a medical appointment that he has. And so I’m just trying to find out the part that. Are you guys allowed to withhold him from his medical appointment? I’m his parent. I have sole custody of him. I have my identifying documentation.”
The principal, identified in the video as Principal Moeller, remains firm, pointing to a sign regarding dismissal procedures. He tells the mother, “Let me show you a sign.” The mother counters the argument by saying she has seen that sign. “Obviously the sign is for the norm. It’s for things that happen regularly and routinely,” she argued. Moeller cut in firmly and said, “So make sure you get me, get me right 1:40. And that’s the..The statement I made, and that’s how we’re gonna play it.”
An immovable wall
The Tiktoker keeps trying, arguing that her son is in pain, noting, “He’s complaining. This has been a long-standing appointment that he’s complaining about.” Despite her attempts to explain the urgency, Moeller insists that the timing is the issue and then tells her she is blocking the road, telling her, “You got buses, you got cars, you got students. Think about what you’re [blocking].”
The mother expresses frustration over the delay. She points out that she had been waiting for fifteen minutes, a time during which she could have easily retrieved her son and left.
In the caption of her post, she adds, “I tried to be understanding, but when he told me to reschedule my son’s appointment, as if he was the parent who makes executive health decisions for my child, I knew I had to record for clarity and awareness. But if you’re looking for accountability and logic, then you better keep looking because JCPS is so riddled with inefficiency, and ineffective leadership, fiscal mismanagement and ABUSE of the children, there won’t be any to be found.”
She even asks him about the rescheduling aspect in the video, to which he responds, saying, “You are welcome to do that.” Then, when he remembered it was a dental appointment, he dismissed her.
According to the Kentucky School Boards policy on Absences and Excuses, pupils are required to attend school punctually. While the policy outlines specific criteria for excused absences, including illness of the pupil and documented medical appointments, it also emphasizes the authority of the principal in determining valid reasons for absences.
The district policy states that a medical note is required for absences, with the date, time, and the signature of the health care provider. However, the policy does not explicitly address the withholding of a student during the final minutes of the school day.
Many of her viewers sided with the mother. One Instagram user commented, “Since when is a school allowed to deny a parent access to their own child?! This is insane.” Another suggested legal action, writing, “Sue him personally! This is kidnapping. This is his policy not a law.” Some users pointed out the difficulty of securing medical appointments, with one TikTok user asking, “Do they not have any idea how hard it is to get dr appointments.”
Conversely, some viewers defended the school position, citing the importance of established dismissal protocols. One TikTok user noted, “No. The schools won’t release students about 30 mins prior to school release because it causes as they see it, unnecessary chaos, and can possibly put other students at risk. Just pick up your child before then.” Another added, “It’s on the documents that all parents got before school started. If she was so worried she would have picked up before the window of no pick ups.”
The mother remains adamant that the school’s refusal was an overreach. During the recording, she says, “Fair is him having access to his medical appointment that he has today. That’s fair. That’s fair. Everyone else who just wants to bypass the line is entitlement. He really has a dentist appointment and is going to come back with full documentation of said appointment.”
Moeller just replied, “Well, he’ll be out here at 20 after,” before walking away.
