Man says he tipped a DoorDash driver 20%. Then the driver demanded more money for a cake: ‘It’s my birthday’

She wanted a birthday treat.

A man who posts on TikTok as Ponk D. Luffy said he ordered food for his baby’s birthday and tipped the DoorDash driver 20%. He claimed the driver then asked for more money, writing that it was her birthday, and she wanted a personal ice cream cake.

In the video, which has gained 222,800 views, 30,400 likes, and more than 1,500 comments, Luffy speaks directly to the camera. He asked DoorDash, or someone who works for the company, to clarify whether the driver’s actions are allowed.

He stated he always tips the maximum amount of about 20%. Luffy described receiving a message that read, “Cash tip is really appreciated as card tips may take up to 48 hours. Plus it’s my birthday, just trying to buy myself honestly a personal ice cream cake. Stay blessed.”

DoorDash guidelines on messaging and tip payments

Luffy said he replied that he did not have any cash on him. He stated the driver responded, “Waiting for your order, by the way.” The driver then asked, “Venmo, Apple Pay?” according to the screenshots he showed.

He claimed he was gobsmacked and did not respond. Luffy said the driver followed up with, “I need a cake, at least something good to happen to me today.” He explained he could have sent money, but it would have come from funds set aside for his room the next day, and he already had one room paid off. Whether a tip is generous enough is judged differently by customers and drivers, such as when a TikToker says her 20 percent tip was deemed too low by a DoorDash driver.

Luffy stated he had previously worked for Uber Eats and could use tips right away. He said he did not know how DoorDash handles tips and asked viewers for information. He noted he removed the driver’s name from the video because he did not want to get in trouble if the behavior was allowed, and he speculated she may have contacted others.

DoorDash classifies drivers as independent contractors. Drivers can receive base pay under an Earn per Offer model, typically ranging from $2 to $10 or more, or under an Earn by Time model with a fixed hourly rate for active delivery time. Tips and promotions are added on top of either model, and tips form a large part of many drivers’ earnings.

According to DoorDash’s Community Guidelines, users should not manipulate the platform for monetary gain or engage in other bad faith behavior that could negatively impact other users. The company uses a SafeChat system that monitors chats for offensive language. For unsafe interactions, users are advised to contact customer support or use in-app options after a delivery is completed.

Viewers shared mixed reactions in the comments. One commenter suggested reporting the behavior and wrote, “Report that. Dont beg at your job.” Another said they would not want the food afterward and commented, “Wouldn’t even want the food after that.” The debate over tip expectations has surfaced elsewhere, such as when a woman stepped out to get her DoorDash order and was immediately asked how much she tipped.

A third commenter described tipping and begging as out of hand and wrote, “Tipping culture and begging culture is out of hand.” One person claimed drivers probably send similar messages to everyone and stated, “They probably say that to everybody.” Another shared a different approach and wrote, “When I order I don’t tip until it’s delivered and then I tip very well. Maybe a hot take lol.”
