TikToker says her 20 percet tip was deemed too low by DoorDash driver: ‘You got me driving out here and that’s all you tip?’

A TikTok creator recently shared a frustrating encounter with a DoorDash driver who confronted her directly about the size of her tip, Daily Dot reports. The video, posted by @nicolebreaksitdown on August 22, 2026, has already sparked a massive debate online, racking up more than 18,100 likes and 4,770 comments.

The creator explained that she walked outside to meet the driver as she pulled into the driveway. She started the interaction with a friendly “hi,” but the driver immediately shifted the tone by asking, “How much did you tip?” Caught completely off guard, the creator mentioned that she typically selects the 20 percent option in the app. She told the driver, “Twenty percent is what I usually click on.” The driver was not satisfied with that answer and pressed further, responding, “No, not percentage. How much did you tip?”

After the creator admitted she did not know the exact dollar amount, the driver checked her phone and stated, “You tipped $6.” The creator confirmed that this amount matched the 20 percent she had selected for her order. When the creator asked if the tip had gone through properly, the driver replied, “That is not enough.” The driver then told her, “You got me driving out here and that’s all you tip? You should tip more.”

Being put on the spot like that in your own driveway sounds uncomfortable

The creator wisely chose not to escalate the situation, telling the driver, “I’m not going to my wallet,” before simply saying, “Thank you, have a good day,” and heading back inside. She noted that the entire experience “blows my mind” and she has been left trying to make sense of the interaction. She even asked her viewers if 20 percent is truly considered an inappropriate tip for a delivery service, especially when compared to the level of service provided by a restaurant server.

The comments section on TikTok has been absolutely flooded with different opinions on the matter. Some viewers were clearly on the creator’s side regarding the driver’s behavior. One user suggested, “You remove the tip. Report her for harassment and block her.”

Other commenters shared their own personal formulas for tipping. One person explained, “My rule of thumb when I’m getting deliveries from Walmart is $1 per mile + 20%. So if I order $100 of groceries and live 17 miles from the store I tip $37. I do this with door dash too.”

There was also a strong argument from those who believe delivery and restaurant service are not the same thing. One commenter wrote, “I don’t tip 20% for dropping off food. I tip 20% for servers whose job it is to take my order, bring my food, make sure it’s correct, refill my drinks, being my check, take my payment, and more.”
