We have all had those moments where our brains skip a few steps and just blurt out the most awkward thing. Stephanie Easley, a dedicated dog rescuer, says she found herself in that exact predicament during a late-night wildlife rescue operation.
While attempting to explain why she was lingering at a closed gas station, she accidentally told a Chisago County sheriff that she was going to show him her boobs.
Stephanie shared the story on Instagram and TikTok, where her video has already racked up a combined 80K views. It all started when she was contacted about a nest of baby squirrels that was discovered inside a work truck. The truck had been parked at the caller’s mother’s house for five days, and the situation quickly became an emergency. Although Stephanie focuses on dog rescue, she has contacts in the animal rehabilitation world and stepped in to help.
The trouble happened when they met at a closed gas station in Minnesota to do the transfer. A sheriff pulled up to investigate, and in her panicked state, wanting to explain that she was handling baby squirrels, Stephanie blurted out the wrong thing. She told her viewers, “I just told a Chisago County sheriff that I was going to show him my boobs, and I meant it, but I didn’t mean it in that way at all. Now he was like, oh, no, no, no. And then I had to go backwards and explain.”
The temporary incubator
According to Stephanie, the initial rescue had gone well. However, they quickly realized there were three more babies still inside the truck, leading to a frantic search. Eventually, the caller’s boyfriend managed to tear the truck apart to retrieve the remaining babies. Since the rehabber was asleep and unavailable to take the squirrels immediately, Stephanie had to step in.
She had an incubator and some instructions on how to keep the babies warm until morning. Until she could get to her incubator, though, she went for the next best thing and tucked the babies against her body for warmth. Yes, she tucked them into her bra. So when the deputy rolled up, she sheepishly admitted, “So I showed him my boobs because he rolled up to a gas station where we were meeting, a very closed gas station. And I just have baby squirrels there.”
When asked by a follower what the sheriff’s reaction was after seeing the squirrels, Stephanie admitted, “I really wish I could tell you, but I was slightly dying inside and didn’t register what the reaction was.”
She also used the post to clear the air with her husband, joking, “So I just want to apologize to the Chicago County Sheriff and my husband. I didn’t mean it like that, that’s all.” Hilariously, in a different case, an LA actor gave in to awkwardness to talk about murder while helping a woman through the woods.
The internet was incredibly amused. One Instagrammer commented, “Imagine thinking you’re about to bust a drug deal and it’s just baby squirrels.” On TikTok, a user jumped in and validated Stephanie’s technique.
They wrote, “I do wildlife rescue, and I have done the same thing when in a pinch with nothing to warm them! I’ve even had newly hatched owls tucked into my boobs. LOL One actually hatched between my boobs during transport! Usually I have an incubator I can plug into my car.” Stephanie was quick to agree, responding, “Omg so cool!!!!!! Skin to skin is just perfect sometimes lol.”
Another commenter shared their own foot-in-the-mouth moment. They noted, “don’t worry! That’s not the worst thing that’s been said. I asked a state trooper that thought I was drunk driving if I, ‘could blow it already to prove I’m not a problem.’ I had 3 drunk females in my car and I was the fed up DD that was covered in booze and vomit he was bright red and I was horrified and saying that’s not what I meant while everyone in my car was staring and laughing their butts off.”
According to the Wildlife Rescue League, handling baby squirrels requires careful attention, especially regarding temperature. Since young squirrels often build nests in unconventional places like car engines, they can easily end up displaced. Although recently, squirrels have been suffering from a skin illness that makes them look like zombies, and in that instance, they are best left alone.
The Wildlife Rescue League notes that if a baby squirrel is chilled or unfurred, it needs immediate help. Using body heat is often a last-resort method for rescuers when an incubator is not immediately available. It is a messy, high-stakes process, but as Stephanie found out, sometimes the most difficult part of the job is just managing the chaos of human communication.
