Mom eats son’s special birthday breakfast cake then explains why it’s fine: ‘Is your wife a beaver?’

A father spent the day before his son’s birthday tracking down a specific pastry that he loves: a strawberry cheese coffee cake. The idea was a breakfast the boy would be excited about, sitting there waiting for him when he got up. Things didn’t go as planned because his wife came home late that night and ate most of it. 

He posted the picture on Reddit’s r/mildlyinfuriating forum, though, based on the reactions, it’s safe to say that mildly infuriating is an understatement. By his account, she knew perfectly well who the cake had been bought for. Her defense, as he replayed it, was that none of this was a big deal, because she had left the boy one full slice.

“Is your wife a beaver?” asked one user, and another replied: “I don’t think so because she didn’t give a dam.”  It starts with a dad joke, but it just goes downhill from there. “Maybe take him to get one of his own. She sounds selfish as hell,” one person noted.

“Can’t imagine putting yourself before your child like this, literally taking your own kid’s birthday cake,” wondered one Redditor. Others are arguing whether what remains of the desolated cake in the picture even amounts to a full slice. It seems like the mom ate the cheesy frosting and just left the crust. “The fact that she also only ate the middle is really bothering me,” one of the repliers wrote. “I would lose all attraction to someone who did this to a child, let alone their own son,” read another comment.

Birthday cake disputes are more common than we realize

Posts like this constantly surface on the internet, and they follow a distinct pattern. The reaction is usually due to how much effort one person puts into a gesture, and how casually somebody else writes it off. 

A man who received a homemade Biscoff cheesecake from a friend watched it vanish over several days despite asking his household to leave it alone. When he complained, his mother accused him of eating it himself. (via People) 

A woman came home on her birthday to find the three specialty cupcakes she’d been looking forward to were gone. Her husband had worked through all of them inside a day. (per ScaryMommy) 

It runs the other way too. One husband, according to Newsweek, was told he could have a birthday cake on the condition he finish it, did exactly that, and was then informed he would never be baked one again for behaving like a glutton.

Somewhere, unfortunately, a kid is learning that “I left you a slice” is not the flex his mom thinks it is.
