A New York man says a wedding reception took an unexpected turn when the best man allegedly revealed a long-standing marriage pact with the bride, leaving the bride in tears and the groom apparently ready to confront him. The account comes from TikToker Thestorytella_ (@thestorytella_), who described the alleged incident in a TikTok video.
The creator said he attended the wedding reception but not the wedding ceremony as an acquaintance of the couple and initially saw nothing out of the ordinary. That changed during the speeches.
According to Thestorytella_, the best man spoke about knowing the groom for 19 years, playing football together, and eventually introducing him to the bride, whom the TikToker identified as Sharon. Then things got complicated.
The best man allegedly had a wedding pact with the bride.
In his speech, the best man then allegedly told Sharon, “You and I made a deal our first year out of college. We made a deal that by 31, if we weren’t engaged, we were gonna get married.”
The best man then reportedly explained that Sharon had been dating the groom, identified in the account as Shawn, for five years. When Sharon turned 31 without an engagement, the best man said they reconnected.
According to the TikTok account, Sharon told the best man that she did not want to be with someone uncertain about her, meaning Shawn. The best man allegedly described hooking up, spending more time with her afterward, helping her family, and making plans for a future together.
Then came the part that reportedly stunned the reception. The best man allegedly said Shawn proposed to Sharon a few weeks later. According to the TikToker, Sharon accepted the proposal.
The best man then ended his speech by saying the couple was “perfect for each other” and that he wanted nothing to do with the situation before dropping the microphone. The TikToker said the room went silent. Some guests reportedly began recording because they initially thought the confrontation was staged.
According to his account, Sharon began crying, while the groom stood up and followed the best man as he left. The TikToker said the reception effectively ended at that point. He acknowledged that he did not know the couple well enough to say what happened afterward and said he expected to learn more later.
Marriage pacts are a real thing.
The agreement described in the TikTok is a type of “marriage pact,” in which two friends agree to marry if they remain unmarried by a particular age or under specified circumstances. Such agreements are not merely a fictional plot device.
The concept has appeared in real-life relationships and even in organized matchmaking programs. The New York Times reported on marriage pacts involving friends who promised to marry if they remained single by a certain age, including one couple who ultimately married years before their deadline.
A marriage pact can function as a playful promise or, in some cases, a way for friends to acknowledge feelings they have not openly discussed. But the arrangement can create complications when one person enters another serious relationship while the original pact remains unspoken.
In this alleged wedding incident, the pact apparently remained private until the best man’s speech. For the guests who witnessed the speech, however, the wedding apparently ended with a marriage pact becoming very public.
