A Pennsylvania woman says an employee at a Chanel store told her to leave after she went in hoping to buy herself a pair of designer shoes as a reward for months of hard work.
Morgan Hilton, who posts on TikTok as @morgan_hilton, shared her account in a video that has gained more than 9,400 views. She said the incident happened at a Chanel store in New Jersey.
Hilton said she had been working full-time for about six months and had been saving money by living with her family. She said she wanted to “treat myself to something nice” this holiday season and had her “eye on a pair of shoes,” though she said she was not necessarily planning to buy something expensive.
Woman says she was told to leave if she was not buying anything
Hilton said she was prompted to share her story after seeing a video of actor Adam Sandler and his daughter visiting a Chanel boutique in Beverly Hills. She said a saleswoman in that video looked the daughter “up and down and was like, ‘This is for serious buyers only, sorry, like don’t touch it.'”
Hilton said her own visit to the store left her feeling similarly dismissed. She said she “was greeted with the most horrible attitude from the employees” and that “they did not take me seriously at all.”
According to Hilton, an employee quickly dismissed her and told her, “if you’re not here to buy something, you need to get out of the store.” She said this happened even though the store was not busy at the time.
Hilton said, “there was nobody else in the store, there was nobody else looking around,” and added that “it’s not like she was busy, it wasn’t chaotic or anything.” She said she left the store feeling upset, saying she was “so p****d when I left that store” and asking, “how could I ever want to buy something from this brand even though I love all of their stuff?”
Hilton said she believes her age may have factored into how she was treated. She acknowledged that she looks young but said the employee “literally dismissed me so fast” and “judged me so fast too.” She closed her video by asking other viewers whether they had a similar experience at Chanel. For Chanel, the complaints don’t stop at perceived snobbery, as a Louisiana DSW called police on a woman for wearing her own Puma shoes.
Several commenters responded to Hilton’s video describing similar experiences at other luxury retailers. One commenter said they faced a similar situation at Gucci while shopping for a “push present” after graduating medical school, writing that they were dressed casually and that “the employees at these ‘luxury’ stores can be very judgmental and rude sometimes.”
Another commenter described visiting Cartier with “cash in hand to purchase a bracelet,” saying “NO ONE offered to help me and it was not busy.” They added that they had been traveling and in the car for hours before the visit. Poor retail service can take many forms, such as when a woman confronts a Goodwill manager after employees publicly shame a struggling man over shoes.
Other commenters said the experiences described in the comments would affect where they choose to shop. One wrote, “I will never buy anything Chanel for this exact reason, I am an LV girly for life.” Another said they prefer buying Chanel through a third-party retailer, writing, “I always buy Chanel at a store like Neiman Marcus customer service is so much better.”
