She waits on the plane while Delta questions her boyfriend’s ticket. Then gate agents allegedly tell her to leave him behind: ‘gaslighting us’

The flight manifest showed him seated next to her.

A TikTok user named Viv, who posts as @moosealert, shared a detailed account of what she described as a difficult experience with Delta Airlines at New York’s JFK Airport on Friday, August 20. In the TikTok video, she explained that she and her boyfriend arrived at the gate for their flight, both holding separate boarding passes under the same reservation he had made.

She said she scanned her boarding pass without issue and was told to continue onto the jet bridge because her ticket had already been processed. When her boyfriend tried to scan his boarding pass, she claimed an error appeared right away. Gate agents then directed him to the ticket counter, stating there was a problem with his ticket, according to her description.

Viv stated that her boyfriend is a frequent Delta traveler and Delta card holder who had never faced this kind of issue before. She added that she waited while he went to resolve it, and agents eventually told her to take their two carry-on bags and board the plane, with the understanding that he would join her later.

Gate agents and flight crew reportedly clash over boarding and communication

Once on the plane, Viv said she stopped near the front and spoke with a flight attendant because she had no cell service and could not reach her boyfriend. The flight attendant checked the manifest on his phone and confirmed both of them were listed in seats next to each other, she claimed. She questioned how someone listed on the seat map could be told he did not have a valid ticket.

Delta agents at the gate were reportedly telling her boyfriend that his ticket was unpaid, even though he held a boarding pass, had checked in, and had passed through security with no earlier notice of any problem, according to Viv.

She said she grew increasingly worried as boarding continued and other passengers moved past her. Delta’s gate confrontations have sometimes escalated, as one traveler at LAX used the gate microphone to demand help after no agents showed up.

Viv described becoming emotional when agents indicated the doors would soon close and that she needed either to leave the plane or continue without her boyfriend. She took the bags and began walking off the aircraft. At that point, she claimed another gate agent wearing a red coat approached her in the jet bridge, pointed a finger at her, and told her to calm down while accusing her boyfriend of causing a scene.

She stated that the agent said they did not have time for the situation and that she should not have left the plane. Viv maintained that agents had previously instructed her to deboard if she did not want to travel alone. In her video, she said, “This whole time they are just gaslighting us, making us feel like we are absolutely crazy for no reason.”

The same agent then allegedly went to her boyfriend and told him to stop communicating with her because she was in hysterics and needed to calm down. Viv said she remained in the tunnel, scared and unwilling to interact further with the gate staff. Eventually, her boyfriend was allowed to board after agents required him to repurchase and rebook a seat that turned out to be the exact one next to hers, she claimed. They were the last passengers to board.

Once seated, the plane sat on the runway at JFK for about six hours while trying to reach Las Vegas. Viv said the flight crew eventually timed out, forcing the aircraft to return to the gate and the flight to be canceled. She noted that weather may have played a role but expressed frustration over the lack of timely communication from the airline, which she said kept telling passengers the flight would still depart.

Viv stated that she plans to file an official complaint with Delta Airlines and that she will not fly the carrier again. She asked viewers whether anyone else had experienced a similar situation in which a boarding pass was issued yet later flagged as unpaid with no prior notification. Delta’s troubles with passenger treatment extend beyond communication, as a pregnant Maryland woman was allegedly forced off a flight for allegedly paying too little for her ticket.

In the comments under the video, several viewers offered explanations for how such a ticket problem can occur. One commenter suggested the payment for the boyfriend’s ticket may have been declined after the boarding pass was already created, adding that passengers sometimes receive an email requesting another form of payment while the seat is still held. Viv replied to that comment, writing, “he never got an email.”

Another commenter said the situation happens often when a payment does not go through and the reservation gets flagged. A third noted that a boarding pass and seat assignment do not always guarantee a valid ticket, and that a visit to the counter is meant to resolve the issue or collect payment.

Other comments focused on the airport staff. One suggested contacting Delta’s leadership by writing, “Email Ed Bastien. He DOES handle business when he gets notified.” Another shared a broader view of the New York-area airports, saying, “JKF, EWR, and LGA has the rudest workers I’ve ever come across. I think to get hired you have to be mean.”
