It turns out that my once-favorite loaf of organic bread might contain more than just grains and seeds. A Texas-based TikToker named Meg Nickerson recently shared a video on TikTok that has racked up over 4 million views, showing a discovery inside her Dave’s Killer Bread, with 21 Whole Grains and Seeds, that definitely didn’t belong there.
Nickerson, a Dallas resident, was preparing a sandwich for her daughter when she noticed something off while cutting the crusts off a slice. “At first, I was gaslighting myself. I was like, ‘Maybe it’s some sort of grain or oat or something,’ but no, it’s for sure a wood chip,” she said.
She holds the objects up and says, “There’s actual wood chips in the loaf of bread.” She then pointed out that these pieces were found throughout the entire loaf. She warned other shoppers to check their own packages, warning, “Cause my daughter was literally half a second from eating a sandwich.”
Well, I definitely don’t need that much fiber in my food
The response from viewers was a mix of genuine concern and dark humor. One commenter urged her to “Report to the fda,” adding, “This is a recall. People could get injured. This shows that their plant and food safety is poor.” Nickerson confirmed in the comments that she had already contacted the agency.
Other users found ways to poke fun at the situation, with one person quipping, “That’s why it’s so expensive. Lumber prices are outrageous.” Another viewer joked, “That’s the killer part of the bread lol.” Interestingly, another user claimed they checked their own loaf after watching the video and found similar hard pieces in the middle of their bread.
When you look at the ingredient list for the 21 Whole Grains and Seeds variety of Dave’s Killer Bread, there is one item that stands out as a potential suspect. The bread contains oat fiber, which is typically sourced from the hull or husk of the grain rather than the cereal grain itself.
This ingredient is a common source of insoluble fiber and is generally considered safe. That being said, it can have a hard, wood-like texture if it isn’t ground down properly during production.
It is important to note that while this seems like a logical explanation, it hasn’t been officially confirmed that these pieces are indeed oat fiber. Additionally, it is impossible to verify exactly what Nickerson found in her kitchen.
A spokesperson for Dave’s Killer Bread reached out with a statement regarding the situation. They wrote, “At Dave’s Killer Bread, we take quality matters very seriously. We are in contact with the consumer to address their concern.”
While I appreciate the brand reaching out, I think it might be worth it to check your Dave’s Killer Bread loaf. After all, as of late, we have quite a few stories about food production that could put you off those specific products.
A hotel worker gave us a really unsavory look at scrambled eggs. On the other side of the country, a Lil Ceaser’s employee gave us all the reasons to never go back for their cheap pizza.
So basically, I am just adding a new thing to my ‘don’t eat’ list.
