‘This is embarrassing’: Woman claims she feels unsafe with Uber driver but his video proves she’s the one refusing to leave the car

An Uber driver has received support from the people of TikTok after he found himself in a bizarre situation in which his passenger refused to leave his car despite claiming that she felt unsafe with him. She even called the Uber safety line despite the driver doing his best to show he wasn’t a threat.

Unfortunately woman having frightening experiences with Uber drivers isn’t uncommon, but in this situation it seems the driver wasn’t doing anything wrong. The altercation, which is quickly garnering attention online, was recorded by the Uber driver himself and we can see him calmly sitting in the driver’s seat while the woman in the back passenger seat speaks with what seems to be an Uber helpline operator.

While we don’t know the full context to the situation, the driver explains that he is recording for his own safety after the woman claimed she felt unsafe with him.

The woman can be heard speaking with the person on the other end of the phone who seems to be unsure of how exactly to handle the situation, advising the woman to call 911 if she feels unsafe. The driver explains, “she says she feels unsafe, I’m sitting here, obviously have my seat belt on, nothing’s going on, she’s sitting back there, she refuses to get out of my vehicle.”

An Uber standoff

Despite claiming that she doesn’t feel safe it seems evident from his video that the driver isn’t keeping her in the car. The two reach an impasse with the safety line operator asking if there’s any nearby stores or public spaces the woman can go and wait for another Uber. The driver flips the camera to show that there are businesses outside and reiterates that the passenger can get out and go to them to wait if she really doesn’t feel safe.

The woman claims that she’s afraid he will leave with her luggage in the boot if she gets out of the car. At this point the driver, who seems rather fed up, gets out of the car himself to get her luggage out of the boot himself. This seems to bring their strange standoff to an end.

People feel for the driver but also worry about the woman

While what we see in the video exonerates the driver there was also some concern for the woman too. Comments on TikTok suggested she may have been suffering from some sort of mental break down which might have explained her behavior. 

However, the majority of the sympathy went towards the man who, in all fairness, handled the difficult situation very well. Viewers commended him for staying calm as well as thinking to record as many pointed out his version of events might not have been believed had he not thought to record it all as proof. “If he did not record noone [sic] would believe him,” wrote one person.
