Twitter competitor Hive has been taken offline due to security concerns

Hive has been temporarily shut down.

Twitter is a dumpster fire right now due to the multiple changes, layoffs, and Elon Musk’s mismanagement. So it comes as no surprise that users would seek other social platforms to find a replacement, just in case Twitter does shut down. Unfortunately, one of Twitter’s competitors, Hive, reportedly was taken offline due to security concerns.

Hive posted an announcement, ironically, on Twitter, where it announced that it will be shutting down its servers due to security concerns. The app was hacked by the German hacker group Zerforschung. According to their website, they found that Hive had “a number of critical vulnerabilities” and decided to do something about it.

Zerforschung claimed that they tried to address the issues directly with Hive but it led to zero actions taken to fix the issues. They posted that the issues they found allowed any hacker to “access all data” including private content, deleted messages, and private information such as emails. The group released a video on how a hacker could easily alter anyone’s post on the app.

The hacker group didn’t say if they attempted to steal people’s information. But based on what’s seen on their website, they only released the blog post in hopes to get Hive’s attention. They also recommended Mastodon if users want a better alternative to Twitter. Meanwhile, Hive has confirmed that no user information was breached, but the app will be down for a couple of days as they fix these issues.
