‘We’re in sacred times’: Shopper stunned after finding anti-theft security tags on candy

Candy theft has entered the big leagues

Grocery runs have been getting more complicated lately, and not just at the checkout line. Shoppers browsing everyday snack aisles are running into a familiar obstacle usually reserved for electronics or liquor: locked cases and tagged packaging.

A creator going by chaiglover posted a video on TikTok, filming one such moment during a trip down the candy aisle.

The video opens with on-screen text reading “Ain’t that much stealing in history 😭😭,” before the creator turns his camera toward a candy display stocked with large bags of M&M’s, Reese’s, and other sweets. The shelf looks picked over, and several of the bags have individual anti-theft security tags clipped to them, the kind more commonly seen on items like razors or cosmetics.

When even the candy needs security

“Bro, we’re in sacred times, bro,” he says. “What, like, bro, people are stealing candy at such a rapid rate. There’s no way. There’s no way.”

The clip doesn’t offer any confirmation from a retailer about why the tags are there or whether theft at that particular store has actually gone up. What’s shown is simply the creator’s disbelief at finding security tags attached to bags of candy.

Still, the security tags aren’t the only thing shoppers have noticed. In recent months, retailers across the country have leaned harder into visible loss-prevention measures, from locking up basic household items to putting candy behind security barriers and attaching tags on products that would have seemed low-risk a few years back. Candy is what makes this particular video stand out. Security tags are one thing on expensive electronics, but seeing them clipped onto snack food is another.

The comments section had plenty to say about why a bag of candy would need its own security device in the first place.

“just bring scissors,” one comment read, racking up over 1,400 likes as a semi-practical response to the whole setup.

Another commenter joked, “The security piece cost more than the candy,” a reaction that picked up over 2,200 likes of its own.

Someone else offered a possible explanation tied to pricing rather than crime rates, writing, “it’s because they’re $30 a bag. Who’s paying $30 for candy?”

The comment also gets at something shoppers have been complaining about for a while: grocery prices have climbed across categories, with candy and chocolate prices becoming another source of sticker shock at checkout. Whether that had anything to do with the tags on this particular shelf is unclear. For chaiglover, though, seeing anti-theft devices clipped onto candy was enough to turn an ordinary trip down the snack aisle into a moment of disbelief.
