Woman finds the same shoe priced lower in the men’s corner. She says Walmart tried to gaslight her into paying more for being a woman: ‘the pink tax’

A TikTok creator picked up two nearly identical sneakers from a Walmart shelf and held them up to the camera, one after the other. The first was called Cali, priced at $36.98, and stocked in the women’s section. The second, a few feet away in the men’s section, was called Chad and was marked at $34.98. Beyond the names printed on them, she couldn’t see much difference between the two.

Alaina Fountain, who posted the clip, opens by grabbing the Cali shoe off the rack. “Cali shoe, $36.98, right? Women’s, okay? This is the shoe, right? It says Cali on it, right? Take a good look at it.” She then walks over to the men’s rack. 

“Now come over here. This one is called Chad. It’s $2 cheaper, right? This is the men’s, right? Chad, okay? It says Chad on it.” The video opens with on-screen text accusing Walmart of making her pay more “just because you’re a woman.”

The $2 Difference Didn’t Go Unnoticed

Midway through, Fountain holds the two shoes side by side and asks viewers directly: “Um, can you tell the difference between the shoes? Tell me which one’s the women’s and which one is the men’s.” The clip closes on her feet, one shoe on each, before she asks, “$2 difference. For what?”

One reply under the clip got straight to the point: “pink tax my dear, pink tax.” Plenty of other viewers had the same thought, bringing up the pink tax in the comments.

A Commenter offered a theory of her own, writing that Walmart’s “women’s one has a digital tag so the price can go up if Walmart feels like it but the man’s doesn’t.” The comment received more than 2,300 likes, although nothing in Fountain’s footage confirms that explanation.

Another commenter described a separate run-in with the same store. She said she was comparing two versions of a winter coat when she noticed that the men’s version used more fabric, yet, in her words, the “women’s was $20 more expensive.”

Price discrepancies aren’t the only thing prompting shoppers to take a closer look at what they’re buying. One buyer thought she’d landed Saint Laurent flats through The RealReal, only to start digging once the fit felt off.

So far, Walmart hasn’t addressed the video, and neither Fountain nor the commenters ever get a straight answer on what separates Cali from Chad beyond the label. What the footage actually shows is narrower than the caption suggests: two shoes that look about the same, sitting in two different sections, at two different prices.
