A restaurant menu that offered both a “girl dinner” and a “boy dinner” has gone viral after a TikTok user accused it of charging women more for less. According to Brobible, “girl dinner” or “boy dinner” refers to a type of low-effort meal that is apparently treated as gendered.
A “girl dinner,” on the other hand, may also mean a grazing plate of light snacks like cheese and crackers, while a “boy dinner” tends to be more chaotic, such as handfuls of cereal eaten straight from the box without milk.
A user named Simone Verghe recently posted a photo of a restaurant menu card on TikTok, which drew more than 1.6 million views. The card showed a set menu titled “Girl Dinner” priced at $25, but it also had a “Boy Dinner” offering at $20.
The two menu options differed in both price and contents
As shown on the menu card, the “Girl Dinner” consisted of caviar, Caesar salad, and spicy vodka pasta, with a choice of a martini or champagne. The “Boy Dinner” included charred pepperoni with dippers, a “jumbo glizzy,” which is likely a hot dog, a Tall Boy, and a choice of shot.
Verghe circled the two prices and added on-screen text reading “pink tax.” She was making the point that the Girl Dinner was pricier only because it was targeted at women. Many commentators, however, disagreed with her. Disputes over restaurant charges have surfaced online before, including a case where a diner questioned a surprise fee on her bill.
The top comment reads: “champagne and caviar vs pepperoni slices and a shot.” “girl its caviar vs pizza,” another pointed out,” while another said, “its not pink tax its more expensive items.”
In response to those comments, Verghe shared a follow-up video showing herself and a friend clinking glasses as they began their “girl dinner.” On-screen text in that video read: “Funding our girl dinner w these hate comments.” It was not clear whether Verghe changed her original position after the criticism. Disagreements over what diners should pay have played out in other viral moments, such as one where a group left without covering the full bill.
According to the World Economic Forum, the pink tax describes products or services identified as being for women that cost more than the “male” equivalent. A common example they gave is that female-targeted razors cost more than those marketed toward men, despite both being functionally similar.
One U.S. government study found that personal care products for women were on average 13% more expensive than their male equivalents. The same study reportedly found that accessories and adult clothing were 7% and 8% more expensive, respectively.
Several attempts have been made to pass a law repealing the pink tax through Congress, but none have succeeded so far. The most recent bill was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce in May 2025, and its status has apparently not changed since.
