Woman forgot her umbrella and asked a stranger to share his. Then she tried to shame him online for refusing: ‘Men in 2026’

A woman caught in the rain pointed to a man nearby who was holding a large umbrella over himself. She filmed the moment while waiting in line, adding the caption “men in 2026” to the video.

The clip surfaced on TikTok account Hotnews622, which reposted the original video from @smartiesssssss. The woman featured in the footage is the creator behind the original post, which has since surpassed 10.2 million views on TikTok.

In a follow-up response included in the video, the woman explained her side. She wrote she was “soaking” wet and that the man had a “really big umbrella.” She added the clip took “2 sec” to make and said she didn’t expect it to spread. She also said she would likely invite a stranger under her own umbrella. She added that she understood the other side too.

Was he expected to share his umbrella?

The comments quickly divided over whether the man should have offered to share it. One person asked, “Did she ask if she can share??” Another wrote, “there ain’t no gentleman if there ain’t no lady.”

The disagreement was less about giving the umbrella away than whether he should have offered to share it. Some argued that nobody owes a stranger their umbrella, especially when they were the one who prepared for the rain. The idea of what counts as gentlemanly behavior has come up in other TikTok disputes, too, including one woman who rejected a risky first date and was later tracked down online.

Others said sharing it, not giving it away, would have cost him little. One comment noted the risk cuts both ways. “If that guy did share his umbrella, this goes from ‘dead chivalry’ to creepy guy tries to hit on me,” it read.

Her tone suggests she didn’t take the clip too seriously. Still, awkward encounters between strangers can take on a life of their own online, as one woman found after an accidental interaction involving a stranger and a joke about tickling. 

Other replies leaned harder into the debate itself. “Y’all can’t ask for chivalry and feminism at the same time,” one read. Another pushed back against that framing entirely, writing, “She was making fun not everything has to be serious.”

As of this week, the repost continues circulating, and neither person involved has commented further.
