A woman who posts on TikTok as Lynne (@chaoticcrochet) said in a video that she got in trouble for trying to buy ice cream at Chick-fil-A. She described the temperature as 94 degrees and said it was really hot. The TikTok video she posted gained 112,900 views and more than 500 comments.
Lynne said she was on her way to work and stopped at Chick-fil-A for her usual meal of a side salad and grilled nuggets, which she mixes together. She stated she wanted ice cream because of the heat but did not want the small pup cup. She added that she did not want to drive to Dairy Queen when she was already in the Chick-fil-A drive-through.
She said she asked a worker if she could get ice cream in a milkshake-size cup. Lynne explained that she did not want a milkshake, only vanilla ice cream with no flavoring, and that she was willing to pay extra. She said the worker told her she could ring the order up as a milkshake and simply not stir it.
Manager cited corporate rules after a worker had already accepted the order
Lynne said she is a frequent customer and that workers at that location know her by her truck. She described pulling forward to the payment area during peak lunch hours, with cars in front of her and behind her, when a manager walked out.
Lynne said the manager asked, “Hey, are you the one that ordered the tall cup of ice cream?” After Lynne confirmed, she said the manager told her, “So we’re not allowed to do that.” Lynne said she replied, “What do you mean?”
The manager then said, according to Lynne, “Corporate rules, we’re not allowed to sell you ice cream like that. You can only buy the cup.” Lynne said she told the manager she had already paid and that the order was a milkshake that simply would not be mixed. This isn’t the first time a Chick-fil-A cup policy has caused confusion, such as when a Michigan employee was allegedly told he’d have to pay for a water cup he asked for.
Lynne said the manager told her they would allow it that time because the worker did not know the rule, but that they were not allowed to do it and she would not be able to buy ice cream that way again. She said the manager then walked away. Lynne added that another worker seemed confused by the exchange and that a worker told her Chick-fil-A used to sell ice cream in quarts. Chick-fil-A employees have reported other workplace issues, such as when a falling pan caused a concussion and vision problems for one worker.
In a follow-up TikTok video, Lynne said she did not name the location because the staff there is wonderful and constantly goes above and beyond. She said the point of her first video was not the ice cream. She stated that the manager was rude, came out, and yelled at her.
Lynne said a simple explanation about corporate rules would have been enough. She added that the manager’s own employee apologized on her behalf and said, “I have no idea why she was acting that way. I’m so sorry.”
In a third video on TikTok, Lynne replied to a suggestion that she order two small cups or bring her own cup. She said she was on her way to work, did not have an extra cup, and was not trying to be difficult. She said the first employee told her there was a button to modify the order.
Lynne said she did not argue with the manager and only replied, “Oh, I’m sorry.” She said the manager then told her, “Don’t do it again!” and walked away. Another employee, she said, was confused and apologizing and told her, “You absolutely can do this.” Lynne said she will bring an extra cup next time she wants ice cream.
One Reddit user took to r/ChickFilA to ask if they could get their ice cream in a drink cup, saying the regular ice cream cups just aren’t enough.
And apparently, there was a time when the answer was yes. One commenter recalled that a small ice cream came in what was once a kid’s drink cup, while a large one was served in a small drink cup. “Those were the days.” Another said employees would stop every few seconds to bang the cup on the counter and pack the ice cream down, “so you really got a ton of ice cream for not much money.”
One employee revealed, “Our location used to do this a few years back. You could get an ice cream in a large cup as a pint of ice cream. Then we were told we were spending too much money in ice cream costs so we were told to stop and that the ice cream is only one size.”
Some viewers on TikTok commented on how the situation was handled. One wrote, “thats not very “my pleasure ” attitude from them.” Another suggested, “tell them to cancel your whole order and refund you.”
A commenter who said they had worked at Chick-fil-A wrote, “As someone who worked at a cfa. You used to be able to get ice cream in a LARGE drink cup. Corporate changed the rules and they only sell the small cups now.” Others pointed to menu limits, with one writing, “Almost no restaurants can sell items that are not on their menu,” and another adding, “That’s corporate rules end of story.”
