Woman orders a Whopper and a Whopper Jr. at a mall Burger King. Then she sees the $30 total and shows the camera the tray: ‘This is crazy’

She showed everything that came with it.

A woman filming in a mall food court held the camera on a Burger King tray and asked when fast food became expensive. The TikTok clip was posted by LifeWithZenaAndPatrick (@lifewithzenaandpatrick).

The caption on the post read, “$30 at Burger King… and THIS is what we got. I know everything costs more now, but fast food used to be the cheap option! Are you still eating fast food at these prices… or have you tapped out?” The video has gained more than half a million views and 5000 plus comments.

She said she and her companion had come to Burger King to show what they got for $30. She held up three fingers and said, “I’m going to show you this right here. $30. Small onion rings.” The camera then cut to the table.

Whopper prices have almost grown 4x since 2000

The table held two boxes of onion rings, a small container of dipping sauce, two wrapped burgers, and two drinks. One drink was in a white Burger King cup. The other was in a clear plastic cup with a red straw. She pointed at the items and listed a medium order of onion rings, a Whopper, a Whopper Jr., and a small and a medium drink. She said, “$30, guys. This is crazy.”

According to an article by Mashed, Burger King prices vary by region. In 2026, a Whopper without a beverage or fries costs around $8 in densely populated urban hubs and about $5.60 or more in rural areas. U.S. Whopper prices have nearly quadrupled in 26 years, the outlet said. The chain also offers free or deeply discounted Whopper promotions throughout the year.

The report says that Whoppers were sold between $2-$2.30 in 2000. A promotional campaign offered two Whoppers for $2.

Based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator, $2 in July 2000 is equivalent to $3.86 in July 2026. If burger prices had risen only in line with inflation, the Whopper would be closer to $4, not $8. Restaurant operators also weigh costs such as labor and rent, and larger factors such as climate change, when setting prices.

It is unclear which specific factors contributed to the Whopper’s price increase. Burger King’s early 2026 upgrade of the Whopper drew attention. A representative from the chain told Alice Gibbs of Newsweek that the new bun, packaging box, and other ingredient upgrades were more expensive to produce, but the menu price would not go up. At the time, Burger King executives referred to the new Whopper as elevated.

In the comments, some viewers pointed to ordering habits and location. One person wrote, “Start using apps people.” Another suggested cooking instead, writing, “so eat at home. it’s cheeper.” Fast-food prices have drawn plenty of scrutiny lately, such as when a woman orders her favorite Filet O Fish at McDonalds, opens the box, and gets stunned by a double price for half the size.

Other commenters questioned why people complain after paying. One wrote, “Why does everyone complain after they buy the food -don’t buy it that’s the best way to complain.” Another tied the total to the setting, writing, “You’re at the mall. It’s always expensive at the food court…” A fifth commenter wrote, “u seen the price before you ordered.” Fast-food totals have drawn the same sticker shock elsewhere, as when an Atlanta woman ordered a sweet tea, four hash browns and tap water at McDonald’s and the total shocked her.
