Atlanta woman orders sweet tea, a $4 hash brown and tap water that cost $2 at McDonald’s. Then the total shocks her: ‘That’s absurd’

This economy is getting out of hand

A quick McDonald‘s run in Atlanta turned into a receipt breakdown after a TikTok creator revealed what she paid for a few basic items, and the total didn’t sit right with her.

The creator, who posts under the handle mads ventures, filmed herself from her car walking through the charges one by one. “So not only did McDonald’s get rid of all of their refill machines across the country, um, they also started charging for tap water,” she said at the start of the clip, suggesting she saw the charges reflected a bigger change at the chain.

From there, she itemized the order. “So I got charged $2 for this water,” she said, before moving to her second drink. “And I also got charged $2 for my sweet tea, obviously.” The hash brown, she said, added another $4 on top of that. Add it all up and the woman says she was looking at a total of $8.49 for tap water, a sweet tea and a single hash brown. “That’s absurd,” she said in the video.

The price wasn’t the only thing that annoyed her

On-screen text in the video labeled the moment a “recession indicator,” with the creator using the phrase to sum up her frustration over the total. The woman closed out the video with one more gripe. “Recession indicator and no ketchup. What the hell?” she said, noting the location didn’t have any on hand despite the total.

It’s worth noting the woman’s claim about McDonald’s removing refill machines nationwide reflects her own experience and hasn’t been independently confirmed. Pricing at McDonald’s locations can vary by franchise owner and region, so the exact charges she describes may not be universal, even as complaints about rising fast food prices have become a fairly common in recent months.

The video’s comment section, which had crossed 241 replies as of this writing, mostly backed up her frustration while sharing their own experiences. “Tap water btw,” one commenter wrote, seemingly pointing out the irony of paying for something usually free.

Another brought up how much cheaper the drink used to be, writing, “I remember sweet tea was a $1.” A third commenter took aim less at McDonald’s and more at customers themselves, writing, “What’s more absurd is everyone keeps paying it.”

Not everyone in the replies described the same experience. Some users said their local McDonald’s still has self-serve stations running, suggesting the policy, if it is one, isn’t applied evenly across every store.

Whether the charges become a wider trend or remain limited to certain locations, the reaction shows how quickly a small fast-food purchase can spark frustration when customers feel they aren’t getting the value they expected.
