A TikTok user who posts as Jordy (@jordytings) from Nashville shared a short video in which she described an evening at a bar where a man reportedly offered to purchase drinks for her and her friends. The clip has gained 850,500 views, 67,400 likes, and more than 2,000 comments.
In the video, on-screen text stated “what it’s like to be single in 2026” as she began her account of the interaction. Jordy explained that the man had sent their waitress over with an offer to buy the group drinks.
According to her account, the man told the waitress, “I want to buy those girls a drink.” The waitress then asked the women what they wanted, and Jordy said they requested the beer she was holding. She added that the waitress went back to the man with the order, after which he responded, “Never mind.” Jordy laughed, covered her mouth with her hand, and shrugged at the camera as the clip ended.
A 2019 study examined perceptions of women holding beer in social settings
The details Jordy provided align with the account she gave of the waitress approaching the group and confirming the drink choice before returning to the man. Jordy indicated that the interaction concluded with the man’s reversal after hearing what the women wanted. Offers of generosity can vanish quickly, as in one woman’s Tinder date where she had to pull every word out of the man before he never texted her again.
In May 2019, The New York Times reported on a study titled She Looks Like She’d Be an Animal in Bed: Dehumanization of Drinking Women in Social Contexts, published in the journal Sex Roles. Researchers from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the University of Nebraska, and Iowa State University examined how people viewed women and men drinking alcohol in social situations, according to the article.
The study found that both women and men believed a woman drinking alcohol in a social setting was more intoxicated than a man having the same drink, and that she was more “sexually available” and “less human” than a woman drinking water or a man drinking alcohol, per the Times. The dynamic can play out in stranger ways, such as when two men in Mykonos offered to buy women drinks, then allegedly vanished and left their own tab unpaid.
“Sexual availability” was defined as whether study participants perceived the women to be single or open to having casual sex, while “less human” referred to perceptions of lacking self-restraint and being described as mechanical, cold, unsophisticated, superficial, shallow, less intelligent, and less rational, as well as more immoral, the article stated.
Jeanine Skorinko, a psychology professor at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an author of the study, told The New York Times, “Just holding a beer bottle increased perceptions of intoxication and sexual availability for women, but not for men.” The researchers noted that people may be less likely to help a woman in a risky situation if she has been drinking because they might think she is interested in risky or casual sexual behaviors, according to the report.
Viewers responded to Jordy’s video with a range of comments under the post. One commenter wrote, “He can revoke consent at any time. His money his choice.” Another stated, “You told him all he needed to know….. king behavior.” A third commenter said, “I mean yeah… he said a drink not a gallon.”
One person who identified as a server wrote, “As a server, I would’ve already added it to his tab.” Another commenter claimed, “That’s 100% a red flag because beer doesn’t get you drunk like liquor like Jim Beam tequila, and stuff like that does he was trying to get you drunk.” A further comment read, “I’ll take things that never happened for 1,000 please.”
