A man carrying a machete was shot and killed by police at a New Jersey home on Monday night, authorities said. After the shooting, officers entered the residence and discovered three people dead inside, turning what began as a weapons call into a major homicide investigation.
Police were dispatched to a home on River Road in Piscataway around 5:30 p.m. following a 911 call reporting a person armed with a knife, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Officers arrived at the scene and were immediately confronted by a man who ran toward them while holding a large blade. According to the NY Post, a law enforcement source said the weapon was a machete, a detail later confirmed by additional sources.
Officers fired their weapons, striking the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. After securing the suspect, police conducted a sweep of the house, where they found three deceased individuals inside. Their identities have not been released, and authorities have not yet said how or when they died.
Tasers couldn’t stop the armed suspect
The scene was locked down for several hours as detectives and forensic teams carried out their investigation. Officials said the incident remains under active review, including the police shooting, which is standard procedure in cases involving the use of deadly force. No officers were reported injured.
Officers tried to use their tasers to stop the man as he charged at them with the machete. However, the tasers did not work. The man kept moving toward the officers while holding his weapon. Police eventually shot and killed him. In other crime news, some suspects try desperate measures when cornered, like one man who hid in a porta potty to escape authorities.
After the shooting, officers went inside the home and discovered three dead people. The victims have not been identified yet. Two of the dead were grandparents, a source told the outlet. The identity of the third victim is still unknown. It’s also unclear how the man with the machete was connected to the three victims.
Authorities have not said how the three people died. Sometimes family members help police catch suspects in serious cases. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office are now investigating what happened. The Piscataway Township Police Department said the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no danger to the community.
