Controversy erupts as Mississippi DA shares convictions with kindergarten and GTA6-style graphics: ‘crazy and so inappropriate’

It's the second DA-related controversy this year.

Mississippi‘s DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office is facing a fresh round of backlash. The DA’s office shared social media graphics that some compare to kindergarten artwork and Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA6) imagery. The reaction marks the second public controversy involving the office in recent months.

The latest debate centers on a series of conviction announcements posted by the DeSoto County DA. The graphics featured colorful, highly stylized designs. Some online critics argued looked more like video game artwork or elementary school projects than official government communications.

Commenters questioned the tone and presentation of the conviction announcements and suggested they were racist. Among the responses, one commenter wrote, while still sharing laughing emojis, “this is crazy and so inappropriate 😂😂 yall might need to redo this post.”

Another wrote, “This post is very sloppy, pathetic, and [biased]. Yall should really consider making an apology for how this looks.” But another supporting the graphics wrote, “Look at all these people on here fake mad because of a video game themed post, hilarious.”

The DeSoto County DA billboards

This latest controversy follows another high-profile public messaging campaign launched by DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton earlier this year. In May 2026, the district attorney unveiled a billboard along Interstate 55 that read, “WELCOME TO MISSISSIPPI. WHERE THE FIRING SQUAD IS LEGAL. THINK TWICE.”

Barton told local media the campaign served as a deterrent to violent crime and sent a message that offenders would face aggressive prosecution in DeSoto County. “We are going to be loud and clear that DeSoto County does not coddle violent criminals. If you bring violence across our state line, we are going to prosecute you aggressively and hold you accountable.”

The billboard generated significant discussion online and in local news coverage. Some residents supported the message as a crime-prevention effort, while others argued it went too far or unfairly targeted people traveling from neighboring areas.

Comments supporting the billboard included, “This is great!! Consequences for crime!! Duh!!” Critical comments questioned how they were funded and suggested the billboards had racist overtones. (DA Barton publicly stated the campaigns were funded entirely using forfeited drug money seized from busts, meaning no local taxpayer dollars were used.)

The controversy over the billboards wasn’t just about the harsh message; it sparked intense interstate debate because the billboards were strategically placed on the border to target individuals coming out of Memphis, Tennessee, drawing accusations of regional profiling, according to The Mississippi Independent.

As of publication, the DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office had not publicly announced any changes to the social media graphics. A review of the office’s public statements and recent media coverage did not identify any comment from Barton or the district attorney’s office directly addressing the criticism surrounding the social media designs.
