Florida man allegedly challenged a cop to a fight inside a hospital — his mugshot afterward tells the rest of the story

A routine trip to a Florida medical facility took a violent and chaotic turn, ending with a severe physical altercation, a heavily bruised booking photo and a slate of serious felony charges.

According to Guessing Headlights, the incident involves 51-year-old Ronald Jeffery Johnson, who allegedly decided to pick a physical fight with a uniformed law enforcement officer inside the waiting room of Broward Health Medical Center. The altercation left both the officer and Johnson injured, with Johnson’s graphic mugshot later drawing attention online.

The disturbance began on Aug. 29, when Fort Lauderdale Police received reports of an aggressive individual causing a scene at Broward Health Medical Center. An off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officer was working a detail at the hospital and, while wearing his full uniform, responded to the waiting room. Medical staff told police that Johnson was loudly yelling and causing a scene that was frightening patients who were waiting for medical care.

The altercation left both men injured

Instead of calming down when he saw the officer, Johnson allegedly turned his attention toward him. According to the official arrest report, Johnson looked directly at the officer and said, “I want to fight you.”

Johnson then allegedly charged at the officer and grabbed him, starting a physical struggle. The officer tried to restrain him, but Johnson allegedly continued to resist.

The altercation left both men injured. The Fort Lauderdale Police officer suffered a severe laceration to his left hand during the struggle, an injury that required multiple stitches.

Johnson also sustained extensive facial injuries while officers were trying to restrain him. He was treated at the same hospital where the altercation happened before being medically cleared for booking.

When authorities processed Johnson into the Broward County Main Jail, his booking photo showed just how much he had been affected by the altercation. The mugshot showed severe swelling across his face, heavy bruising around his eyes and dried blood around his nose and mouth.

The injuries were reportedly so pronounced that jail staff had to use a gloved hand to hold Johnson’s head upright while taking the booking photo.

Things only got more complicated when Broward County authorities began looking into Johnson’s background. They discovered that his legal troubles extended beyond Florida.

Public records revealed an active, extraditable warrant out of Georgia. The warrant stemmed from a failure to appear in court over a 2023 incident at Cedar Creek Park in Cave Spring. In that case, Johnson was accused of using a boat paddle to threaten an individual in front of their 8-year-old child. He was facing charges of terroristic threats and cruelty to children.

His bail is set

Following the hospital altercation, the Broward County Attorney’s Office filed multiple criminal counts against Johnson. The case is currently being processed as an active first-degree criminal felony matter.

Johnson remains incarcerated at the Broward County Main Jail as the case moves forward. A judge set his total bond at $8,500, though the active warrant from Georgia could complicate his potential release.
