A tenant in Bangor, Maine, woke up to find a stranger sleeping on their couch. The 50-year-old man, Jose Harvey from Milford, had broken into the apartment and was refusing to leave. The resident called police around 8:40 AM after discovering the unwanted guest.
According to People, when officers arrived, they found Harvey still on the couch. But the break-in became even stranger when police noticed that Christmas presents near Harvey had been unwrapped. The tenant was shocked to see a stranger not only in their home but also going through their holiday gifts.
Police questioned Harvey about why he was inside the apartment, but he could not give any logical reason for being there. Officers arrested him and charged him with aggravated criminal trespass. Harvey was taken to Penobscot County Jail but was no longer held there as of November 30, according to jail records.
The intruder found an easy way inside through an open window
The tenant told police that all the doors were locked, but a bathroom window had been left open. This is how Harvey managed to get inside the apartment. The Bangor Police Department used this incident to remind residents about home security, especially during the holiday season.
The department posted on Facebook about the break-in and urged people to check their locks regularly. They wrote that it makes them sad that residents have to worry about these things. The police added that surprises like this don’t put anyone in a festive mood. Waking up to unexplained strange events in your home is terrifying for any resident.
The department advised residents to lock all doors and windows. They also warned people not to leave gifts or packages in their cars, even if the car is parked in the driveway. Shoppers should keep their purchases hidden and out of sight.
“It goes without saying that doing a routine check of your window and door locks is a prudent exercise in this day and age. I know, we shouldn’t have to – it makes us sad, too. Surprises like this don’t put any of us in a festive mood, but even the Grinch figured out the chimney is always an option,ā the statement read. Many people have shared scary encounters with unexpected intruders that made them rethink their safety measures.
The Bangor Police Department ended their message by asking residents to be kind during the holiday season. They urged everyone to keep their hands to themselves, leave other people’s belongings alone, and treat each other well. It’s good advice, especially after such a bizarre incident.
