‘You guys had fun, though, right?’: Miami man laughs after an alleged armed liquor store robbery and wild police chase

He said all he was trying to do was offer the cops a drink.

A Miami, Florida man is behind bars after a wild and bizarre incident that started with stolen alcohol and ended with a high-speed police chase — and a now-viral quote: “You guys had fun, though, right?”

According to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, Florida law enforcement arrested 39-year-old Richard Christopher Smith of Miami after he allegedly stole alcohol from a liquor store and led deputies on a multi-county chase that spanned more than 30 miles. The chase reportedly reached speeds exceeding 100 mph, and Smith’s nonchalant attitude has stunned viewers who’ve seen the body cam footage and law enforcement alike.

He offered cops a vodka seltzer

The situation took an even stranger turn when deputies finally boxed in Smith’s vehicle and attempted to approach. Dashcam and bodycam footage released by the Sheriff’s Office shows Smith offering officers a drink—vodka seltzer—through the window. “Here,” Smith can be heard offering cops a drink as if trying to smooth things over mid-arrest.

At one point, Smith reportedly told the cops, “I was just going to give you a drink, that’s it.” But the headline-grabbing quote came moments after Smith was taken into custody. With a smirk, he casually looked at the deputies and asked, “You guys had fun, though, right?”

Officers didn’t find that funny and quickly placed him in handcuffs, but not before tasing him.  He now faces multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.

“Florida Man energy at its peak”

Deputies say the pursuit started when Smith was spotted driving erratically after allegedly shoplifting from a liquor store in Lake Placid, Florida. When they attempted to pull him over, he hit the gas, and what followed was a multi-county chase that was anything but ordinary.

Throughout the chase, Smith weaved in and out of traffic, ran red lights, and at one point allegedly tossed items out the window — including an alcoholic beverage.

Highlands County Sheriff’s officials described the incident as both “reckless” and “bizarre,” pointing to Smith’s flippant behavior and apparent intoxication.

While officers were left shaking their heads, social media had a field day. Clips of Smith offering a drink and joking with officers quickly went viral, with some users comparing the chase to a scene out of The Hangover or Grand Theft Auto.

“This is Florida Man energy at its peak,” one user commented under a viral video post.

Smith is currently being held at the Highlands County Jail. He faces charges of felony fleeing to elude, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license, and theft. The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said no injuries were reported during the pursuit.
