Forget the summer solstice and the added chunk of daylight it brings, for winter is here! And to mark the occasion, HBO has conjured up a series of icy character posters for Game of Thrones season 7 to compliment this morning’s show-stopping trailer reveal.

There are 12 one-sheets in total, each of which features one of the show’s many power players as they stare down the face of death’s emissary, the Night King. That chilling antagonist looks set to be one of the primary villains of Game of Thrones season 7, forcing Jon Snow (Jaehaerys Targaryen?) and his northerly allies – including the fierce Lyanna Mormont – to spearhead some form of resistance against the Night King and his undead army of reanimated Wights. You know, once the warring humans of Westeros duke it out for good measure.

If you’ve been a loyal disciple of HBO’s fantasy flagship from the off, you’ll notice that the character posters hew close to tradition in that they feature extreme close-ups of Westeros’ many powers players – Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and many more – only this time around, there’s the added danger of the Night King, who can be seen staring out of each’s character’s respective pupil.

The seventh, penultimate season of Game of Thrones gallops onto the small screen on July 16th. Expect the series finale to air sometime in 2018 (?), before HBO begins exploring some form of prequel series that doesn’t involve Dunk and Egg nor Robert’s Rebellion. Those preliminary spinoffs hail from Max Borenstein (Godzilla: King of the Monsters), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) and George R.R. Martin, the founding father behind A Song of Ice and Fire, so fans can at least take solace in the fact that the franchise’s future is in safe hands.
