7 Things The Walking Dead Must Do To Get Back To Its Best

It's widely acknowledged that The Walking Dead is far from its heyday right now. After an attention-grabbing - if controversial - premiere, season 7 began to see viewers drop off every week as the show continued to chew the fat and lose steam. Thankfully, things have picked up in the last couple of episodes, and likewise, the viewing figures have also started to increase again. The midseason finale, in particular, might not have been a classic episode of the show, but it did offer hope that things would pick up when the series returns in February for its second half.

5) Juggle The Storylines Better

By this point, The Walking Dead has got one hefty ensemble cast of characters. The way season 7 has dealt with this so far is to cherry pick a few storylines to follow each week rather than checking in on all of them. Unfortunately, this just means we don’t get to see certain characters for weeks at a time, leaving this half-season feeling very disjointed and lacking in forward momentum. The outcome was that just about everyone was underused.

The worst example is King Ezekiel. Fans have been eagerly awaiting his arrival on the TV show for a while now, after his comic counterpart has become a fan-favourite, Khay Payton impressed when he debuted in episode 2, but for some reason, he hasn’t appeared at all since then – which means we now have to wait roughly three months in between his appearances.

The most obvious fix for this would be to return to the traditional format of following all the main storylines each episode. However, this might be difficult to do with so many people populating this show. Given that, the only option might be to significantly streamline things to make the number of ongoing subplots much more manageable. Knowing The Walking Dead, that would probably mean committing a mass culling of several of the fringe characters. As bloodthirsty as that might sound, we could probably get behind it.
