With the season 8 premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead now only hours away, excitement is at an all-time high as fans are beyond eager to catch up with Rick and co. But before that, the network is giving us a nice little appetizer in the form of their new miniseries, Red Machete.

Following the “path of a red-handled machete from its innocent beginnings on a hardware store shelf at the start of the apocalypse, as it lands in the hands of survivors good and evil, familiar and new,” the first episode is now available for your viewing pleasure and you can give it a watch up above. If the weapon looks familiar, it should, as it’s the same one that Rick used to kill Gareth back in season 5.

Though a bit of an odd premise for a miniseries, exploring the violent history of the machete could prove to be quite fun and this first instalment will certainly put a smile on the faces of fans. At only 2 and a half minutes, it’s a brief, bloody and violent look at the weapon’s origins and kicks things off on a solid note. If you like what you see, you’ll be happy to know that there’s an additional four episodes to come as well, which will all be made available throughout season 8.

Speaking of which, war is (almost) upon us, folks, so batten down the hatches and get ready for The Walking Dead‘s return tonight. Expect “Mercy” to set the wheels in motion for a battle of epic proportions and if it’s more coverage you’re after, you can have a gander at our thorough review of season 8’s premiere, the “most ambitious” instalment in AMC’s zombie saga to date.
