We finally have a decent look at the cast and style of American Horror Story: 1984. The ninth season of the FX show has so far been marketed through a few oblique teases, and the disappointing news of a reduced role for Sarah Paulson and other series mainstays. Ryan Murphy broke the silence today though as he shared the ‘camera tests’ from the first day of shooting via Instagram.
It’s fair to say that American Horror Story is doubling down on its period setting, with the teasers showcasing the cast in various ’80s outfits. The series of short Instagram videos include returning actors like Emma Roberts, as well as Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy and Angelica Ross. The footage combines roughly shot camera tests with the cast in what appears to be a summer camp cabin, supporting the theory that the new series has a slasher theme.
Challenging Stranger Things for the most 1980s-drenched series of the summer, highlights include Roberts in leg warmers, Lourd with a blond mullet, and Fern looking pretty pleased with himself in aerobics gear. Glee‘s Matthew Morrison also pops up with something unusual going on with the front of his costume, while Dan Hartman’s “I Can Dream About You” provides a suitably upbeat period song. Furthermore, we get some more sobering looks at John Carroll Lynch as a potential killer stalking the cabin.
We expect to see more teasers now that American Horror Story: 1984 is in production, and hopefully some additional details of the plot as the series approaches its September 18th premiere.
What do you think of the cast reveal, though? Are you excited to see what one of the most entertainingly unpredictable series can do with a slasher setting and the excesses of the 1980s? Sound off below with your thoughts.
