Smoke and mirrors. That’s the tactic that has been employed by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and the creative team at FX ahead of American Horror Story season 6.

With little under a month to go until the show’s much-anticipated return to the airwaves, Murphy and Co. have remained mum on the characters and setting featured in the imminent sixth season. Don’t bank your hopes on those unnerving teasers, after FX revealed many of them to be total misdirects. Whether today’s snippet falls into that camp will be told in time, but the most prominent theory pins American Horror Story S6 in the year 1590, where the upcoming batch of episodes will seemingly explore the confounding mystery behind the Roanoke Colony.

The jury’s still out on that one, though. On the topic of toying with expectations, FX CEO John Landgraf stated recently that:

“They made many more trailers than you’ve actually seen for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story, different genres. They’re really fun and funny and artfully made. One of them is accurate. The others are all misdirects. We’re just having fun with it. All I can say is there is a theme, a setting, a place and time but we’re not going to reveal it.”

What we do know is that season 6 brings together a cast that includes Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Finn Wittrock, Wes Bentley, Angela Bassett, Denis O’Hare, Kathy Bates and Matt Bomer. The question now is, do you think AHS is bound for the 16th century?

Expect American Horror Story to return via FX on September 14.
