Widely acknowledged as one of the best animated comedies currently on the air, the wait for Rick and Morty season 3 has proven to be agonizing for fans. For starters, things ended on a cliffhanger and the show has now been off the air since October 2015. That’s a huge gap, and despite a funny sneak peek being released not too long ago, the next outing still has no premiere date.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like it’s any closer to getting one, either, as creator Dan Harmon appears to be unsure of when the series will finally return to Adult Swim. Originally scheduled to air last year, Rick and Morty was pushed back to a vague 2017 premiere date. Unfortunately, it still sounds like the show is a long way off.
“I don’t have a release date for Season 3. It’s not that I know it and I’m not allowed to say it; it’s [Adult Swim’s] domain. What I will tell you is it’s late because of us, it’s late because of me.”
Harmon didn’t elaborate on the specifics of the delay, but noted that co-creator Justin Roiland agrees with him on why it’s happened.
“If Justin were here he’d agree. He and I would go, ‘Yeah, we fucked up,’ and it’s hard to put your finger on how we fucked up. ‘Rick and Morty’ keeps taking longer and longer to write, and I don’t know why.”
Rick and Morty is such a unique and creative series that it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that writing it’s a challenge. It also doesn’t help that it has a unique production process where the animation is done with retrospecting, meaning the voice actors can ad-lib lines on the fly.
The third season is obviously going to happen at some point, but it’s clear now that we’ll have to be extremely patient. While viewers have grown used to the vast majority of shows debuting new seasons on a yearly basis, Rick and Morty may just end up being one where we’re forced to wait anywhere from eighteen months to two years for. Here’s hoping it will be worth it, eh?
