It looks like Russell T. Davies really means business with the story treatment he’s come up with for the upcoming 60th-anniversary special of Doctor Who, because the trilogy is getting official novelizations.
The official Twitter account for the long-running British sci-fi series revealed today that “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle,” which are the official titles for the 60th-anniversary trilogy, are getting their own novelizations in January.
We can’t remember the last time we were this excited about a Doctor Who outing, and the BBC is understanding the assignment of hyping it up too well. This is going to mark the return of David Tennant to the titular role after a decade, so who knows what other cameos and references Russell T. Davies has worked into his script? It’s not every day that the show gets to celebrate reaching yet another impressive milestone.
Joining David Tennant are other former regulars like Catherine Tate (Donna Noble) and the late Bernard Cribbins. The actor tragically passed away last year, but it’s a small consolation to know that we’ll get to see him as Wilfred on the small screens one last time.
Besides the obvious hype factors involved here, the very existence of novelizations by three different writers seems to imply that the 60th will be plot-heavy and eventful. The BBC only had two of the Thirteenth Doctor’s episodes novelized, so the last time a prominent story received a treatment like this was Peter Capaldi’s final episode in 2017, “Twice Upon a Time.”
The Doctor Who 60th-anniversary special is premiering sometime in November. Nov. 23, to be precise, if the producers are intending to keep to historical accuracy.
