Proving that there’s still life beyond Gotham, Epix is getting ready to bring us a 10-episode season of Pennyworth, a Batman prequel show which will explore Alfred’s time as a former SAS soldier in 1960s London.

It’s important to stress that this is not a Gotham spinoff, but rather something else entirely. And honestly, there’s a ton of potential to be tapped here. Sure, the military side of Alfred has been a notable aspect of the character for a while now, but it wasn’t really until the graphic novel Batman: Earth One that the door was opened for a more rough-and-tumble version of the fan favorite in other media, namely in movies such as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

And so, Pennyworth will bring us back to a time when the eponymous gentleman’s gentleman was in his mid-20’s, “as he tries to reconcile his former innocence with the killer he’s become as an adult.” It’s an intriguing premise, to be sure, and now, we have our very first look at the latest Alfred to hit our screens, and you can check him out in the gallery down below.

Following in the footsteps of Jeremy Irons, Michael Gough, Michael Caine, Alan Napier and William Austin, now it’s Jack Bannon’s turn to bring the character to life, and let’s just say he appears a lot different than the Alfred we’re all used to. But then again, this is a much younger version of Mr. Pennyworth than we usually get, so that’s to be expected.

In any case, it’ll be interesting to see how the show does, as some may feel that there really isn’t anymore room for another Batman prequel series, even though Gotham‘s coming to a close. If you ask us, we’re certainly curious about what Epix has planned with Pennyworth, but until we see some footage, we’ll reserve judgement.
