The Flash will finally return to The CW on April 25th and it’s about time, too! The Savitar mystery has proved to be one of the show’s most compelling arcs to date and it’s in this episode that we’ll seemingly begin getting some solid answers about the villain’s true identity.
That’s because Barry Allen is going to make a trip into the future to see if he can figure out how to save his fiancee, but what he finds there doesn’t look good. Team Flash has clearly been left devastated by the murder of Iris West at the hands of Savitar and not even a new costume may be enough to help the Scarlet Speedster take down the returning Mirror Master (it’s unclear if those scenes are set in the present day or future, though).
For more on what to expect from this episode of The Flash – titled “The Once And Future Flash” – here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of the network:
Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to the future to find out Savitar’s still unknown identity in the hopes of saving Iris (Candice Patton). Upon his arrival in 2024, Barry encounters future versions of his Team Flash friends, who, following the death of Iris, have become very different people, profoundly impacted by their showdown with Savitar. It will be up to Barry to infuse a sense of hope back into the team, as he proves to be hero his future friends have been waiting for. Meanwhile, back in 2017, the hunt for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) continues. Tom Cavanagh directed the episode written by Carina Adly MacKenzie.
The Flash has made a number of trips into the past, but the future is definitely something new. While an alternate timeline where Iris is dead isn’t quite as exciting as seeing what the Fastest Man Alive would look like a decade or so from now ahead of that “Crisis” we’ve been hearing about since the series premiere, this should still be a lot of fun and hopefully act as a solid return for The Flash when it finally comes back after what’s surely its last hiatus.
