We had heard that Mr. Freeze would be making an appearance in season 2 of Fox’s Gotham, and now it’s been announced that House Of Cards actor Nathan Darrow will play the role. As the show slowly begins to delve more and more into the mythology of Batman, we’ve started to see the emergence of slightly more outlandish villains and storylines – but Mr. Freeze is by far the most fantastical character to feature so far.
TV Line provides a detailed breakdown of this incarnation of Victor Fries, and it sounds like his origins will remain very faithful to his comic book counterpart’s.
Victor begins as one of Gotham’s preeminent cryogenics engineers. Though ferociously smart and eminently capable in his work, Victor struggles to make meaningful connections with others. The one exception is his wife, Nora, who has tragically fallen ill with a terminal disease. Victor’s love for Nora knows no bounds, and as her condition worsens, he goes to extreme measures to figure out a way to freeze her before she dies. This harrowing journey leads to his transformation into the legendary DC villain Mr. Freeze.
How exactly Freeze will be depicted remains to be seen, but the character will make his debut in a two-part storyline in episodes 12 and 13, set to air in December. As for Darrow, he can next be seen as Andrew Madoff in HBO’s telepic Wizard of Lies, and he also has a recurring role in Showtime’s upcoming Paul Giamatti/Damian Lewis starrer, Billions.
Gotham‘s “Rise Of The Villains” season continues next Monday.
