Secret Invasion has taken a turn from the usual Marvel pageantry, with the spy mystery adopting a more noir tone than previous MCU projects. With that said, the series is still packed full of stars, including newcomer to the Marvel world Emilia Clarke, and, of course, the returning, legendary Samuel L Jackson, in the lead role of Nick Fury.
Like most Marvel projects, those who worked on Secret Invasion managed to keep a tight lid on any leaks, including plotlines and, more annoyingly to an MCU fandom who love Easter Eggs and callbacks, whether or not some favorite characters would be returning in the new series. One such hero that eager viewers were wondering about was Daisy Johnson, or Quake as she’s known. That role has been previously played by the actress Chloe Bennet. So, is Chloe Bennet returning to the MCU in Secret Invasion, or will it be a Quake-less series?
What is Secret Invasion about?
Secret Invasion is a six-episode miniseries that follows Nick Fury and a number of his allies as they try to prevent a full-scale Skrull invasion of Earth. As the Skrulls can shapeshift, and some are allied with humans, Fury finds himself increasingly bamboozled by how to deal with the issue.
Who is Daisy Johnson, the character Chloe Bennet plays in the MCU?
Daisy Louise Johnson is a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative who is also an Inhuman. She has the ability to control vibrations, which means giving concussive blasts, controlling shock waves from huge explosions, and even levitation, as well as a number of other cool things. Plus, she can pretty much destroy anything by making its atoms vibrate until they tear apart from each other, which makes her a pretty useful agent.
Johnson was born to Calvin Johnson and Jiaying but was taken away after HYDRA murdered her mother. She was raised at Saint Agnes Orphanage and given the name Mary Sue Poots but abandoned that moniker as soon as she left the orphanage, taking on the alias Skye. When Phil Coulson became the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Skye joined him, and soon adopted her birth name.
Where has Chloe Bennet appeared in the MCU?
Chloe Bennet took on the role of Daisy in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, the series that ran from 2013-2020. She has also appeared as the character in the films Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as well as in the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot, Marvel Rising: Initiation, Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron, and Marvel Rising: Chasing Ghosts.
There have been a fair few arguments in the Marvel fandom about whether or not Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is part of the canon, but seeing as Nick Fury has made an appearance in the series, it wouldn’t be beyond belief for the showrunners to bring in characters like Daisy Johnson.
Is Chloe Bennet returning in Secret Invasion as Daisy Johnson?
The answer is a pretty emphatic no, although hopeful fans still have some straws to grasp at. There have only been three episodes of the series released on Disney Plus at the time of writing, so some might argue there’s still a chance we’ll see Bennet return as Johnson. However, the actress herself posted a story on Instagram in 2021 confirming that she wasn’t attached to Secret Invasion in any way, shape, or form. So, the denial is straight from the source.
With that said, in a more recent interview with ScreenRant, Bennet did say she would love to return to the MCU, even though she hasn’t been contacted about another project:
“Of course. Of course, I would be open to it. Listen, there’s a lot of stuff around that. I so deeply love S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fans because it’s this tenacity that got the show on air to begin with. I have not once been approached or asked or involved in anything after I wrapped S.H.I.E.L.D. And I am not involved in anything that is coming out. I’ve not been asked, but I would be more than excited to put on the suit again. And, of course, of course, Daisy is a big part of who I am. So I would love to, but I have not been communicated [with] about it.”
When you add in the fact that sometimes Marvel actors deny rumors that they know are true to keep the hype up (Andrew Garfield in No Way Home, anybody?), there is a chance we could see Quake helping humanity to stave off the Skrulls. And, given Johnson’s story arc in S.H.I.E.l.D ended with her flying out to space, it wouldn’t be the craziest thing for her to have come into contact with Fury at some point.
However, the biggest likelihood is the one that has been confirmed over and over again by Bennet herself: she won’t be in Secret Invasion.
