‘It’s a series no one cares about’: ‘Secret Invasion’ sets an MCU record as it’s doomed to irrelevance at breakneck speed

Well, that was fast.

Typically we have to wait a little bit for a new Marvel Studios project to sink in before it gets tossed on the scrapheap, but Secret Invasion might just be winning an unwanted award for the fastest backlash against an MCU entry yet. The Samuel L. Jackson series is only three episodes in, as of writing, and yet some quarters are already dubbing it a misfire that has totally failed to capture the public’s attention.

Following the release of this Wednesday’s shocking third installment, one tweet went viral for claiming it was “PAINFULLY obvious” that Secret Invasion must’ve started life as a concept for Captain Marvel 2 before it was re-engineered as a TV show. After all, the comic book event of the same name definitely has a much bigger scope than its screen adaptation.

Whatever you think about the show, it’s hard to deny that an Avengers 4.5-type film based on the Secret Invasion story would’ve had much more impact.

How is a series starring the MCU’s longest-lasting actor passing so many people by?

Remember those pre-release comparisons to Andor? Those were always destined to come back to bite the series.

Speaking as someone who’s very much enjoying the show, I have to admit to talking to at least a couple of casual Marvel fans about Secret Invasion only to discover they didn’t even realize it was airing. Likewise, the viewing figures for its season opener confirm that it’s simply missing the buzz of its predecessors, as it officially had the second-lowest premiere in the US of any Marvel Disney Plus series to date. Let’s hope Marvel has something big planned for its second half. A Brie Larson cameo, anyone?
