Coming soon after reports that Paramount are still interested in a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, it now seems we may see a Netflix live-action show. Franchise co-creator Kevin Eastman discussed all things TMNT at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, and gave us some hints about plans for a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property. Eastman suggested that a harder-edged version of the Turtles, echoing the comic roots of the characters, could be a good fit for Netflix.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, he explained the potential ideas as so:

“…I feel like that’s the direction I think we can go and there’ll be enough of and audience to support both. Because we do see a lot of that fans asking when can we get that edgy, you know, Netflix Daredevil-ish sort of intensity of the Turtles – at the same time, you can balance that with such a wonderful cartoon series like, Rise of the Turtles, the new series, back to that spot where we’re sacred to a much younger audience. So I think that’s hopefully in the future I’d love to see that, really.”

A version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that’s more closely aligned with the black-and-white, violent independent comics of the 1980s is an intriguing idea, especially given the latitude of Netflix. If this does happen, it’d add to the existing Turtles animated movie and series in-development at the streaming company, with the former representing a feature-length spinoff of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

However, there are ongoing questions about how exactly to do a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, and we’re not sure what Paramount have planned for the franchise. A Netflix series might be the way forward, then, as it’d make it easier to explore what’s become a complex mythology for the Turtles. Furthermore, the series has a deep history of plot lines to draw from, including both the original comic runs and the more recent work that IDW Publishing has been putting out.
