Ever since the season 6 finale of The Walking Dead aired, fans have been left waiting to find out who Negan decided to murder in order to teach Rick Grimes and the remaining survivors a lesson. Readers of the comic books think they know the answer, but the AMC series has taken enough liberties in the past that having it follow the source material here is far from a guarantee. While we’re going to have to wait until the show returns to find out the answer, this lengthy new clip from The Walking Dead‘s season 7 premiere offers up a pretty major clue.
Look closely and you’ll notice that Rick now has blood splattered on the right side of his face, which wasn’t there when we last saw him. Why does that matter? Well, chances are it means that Negan’s victim was on his right hand side, narrowing down the possibilities to Rosita, Michonne, Abraham, Maggie, Daryl and Glenn.
Maggie was actually directly next to Rick, but surely The Walking Dead wouldn’t have Negan brutally murder a pregnant woman, right? Actually, on second thought, given where the show has gone before now, it’s actually possible.
Another interesting moment here is Negan dragging Rick into that camper van with an axe in his belt. Could we finally be about to see the hero lose his hand? It was The Governor who took it in the comics, but Negan chopping it off here would certainly make for a second big shock to kick off The Walking Dead‘s seventh season, don’t you think?
All will be revealed when the show returns to AMC on October 23rd.
