Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. left several clues in its season two finale that a major comics team would be assembling in season three, and now it’s been made official. According to Variety, the Secret Warriors are indeed coming to the show when it returns in the fall.

The Secret Warriors storyline will stem right from last year’s plot with the Inhumans, as evidenced by this new synopsis:

“In the aftermath of SHIELD’s battle with Jiaying and the Inhumans, Director Coulson (Clark Gregg) will search the world for more powered people and assemble an extraordinary new team to deal with threats unlike the world has ever seen. However, the Agents of SHIELD will soon find out they’re not the only ones tracking down these new Inhumans.”

In the comics, the Secret Warriors are a team of superpowered agents assembled by Nick Fury as part of his Caterpillar initiative (something that has shown up on the series via Easter eggs). Among them are Daisy “Quake” Johnson, who was revealed last season to be none other than S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Skye, played by Chloe Bennet.

The Secret Warriors storyline will be a great way for S.H.I.E.L.D. to reinvent itself next season, and explore some exciting territory that likely won’t factor into the film side of the MCU anytime soon. It also means that the series can continue playing around with the Inhumans storyline, without risking skewing the narrative of the Inhumans feature film – which isn’t slated to arrive until 2019.

More will be revealed about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Secret Warriors storyline during San Diego Comic-Con next month. In the meantime, you can check out the official season three teaser poster below.
