It’s a good time to be a John Constantine fan. DC’s finest occult detective recently returned to the Arrowverse in an episode of Legends of Tomorrow last month, which will be followed up with a couple of further appearances later this season. What’s more, the character has his own animated webseries arriving in a couple of weeks’ time, too.
Given this renewed interest in the property does that mean that a second season of the live-action show Constantine could be on the cards? If you recall, NBC ran a single season consisting of 13 episodes back in 2014 before the series was unceremoniously cancelled. It was only thanks to a guest spot on Arrow season 4 that Matt Ryan’s interpretation of the character was able to live on.
Unfortunately, when Ryan was asked this question at Wizard World Cleveland over the weekend, he had to admit that he doesn’t know of any plans to reignite the show at present. However, the actor did make clear that he was “always the last to know” about the developments involving his character, so fans should still keep an eye out for any news.
“I don’t know. I’m always the last to know. What’s great is that I’m here today because of you guys, and because the fans really loved the show. I can only say that I loved doing the character and that it wouldn’t be something I’m against at all. I say – never say never in this business because you never know what’s going to happen – but there are no current plans – that I know of, anyway.”
While we’re very grateful that The CW have included Constantine in the Arrowverse, it’s a bit of a bummer that no other threads from his solo series have been picked up. We haven’t seen characters such as Zed or Manny show up, for example, nor have we seen the transformation of Jim Corrigan into the Spectre, a hero who would fit in well within the Arrowverse.
Ah well, at least we’ve got the Constantine animated series coming March 24th, as well as another guest spot on Legends of Tomorrow set for April 9th. Like we said at the start, it’s still a pretty good time to be a fan of the occult detective.
