Undeterred by mixed reviews and questions of thinly-drawn characters, MTV is pushing ahead with its epic fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles now that the network has nailed down plans for a second season.

Based once again on Terry Brooks’ sprawling and best-selling novel series – Shannara Chronicles dates back to 1977, and shows no signs of slowing up – MTV didn’t disclose specific details of the sophomore run, nor when we can expect it to premiere.

Nevertheless, an official statement from the network’s top brass revealed a desire to keep that momentum burning bright.

“This dream team delivered a beautiful, ground breaking show with compelling stories and character journeys which brought in new viewers. I can’t wait to see what season 2 brings,” said Mina Lefevre, Executive Vice President and Head of Scripted Development at MTV.

“We’re thrilled to continue the momentum established in Season 1,” added Jenna Glazier, Executive Vice President, Television Series, Sonar Entertainment. “Along with the ongoing support of MTV, the entire creative team is poised to raise the bar even higher in Season 2.”

Even as MTV’s highest-rated new series of 2016 thus far – The Shannara Chronicles made its bow in January – fans and critics alike took umbrage with the show’s inherent flaws, citing weak characters and a lack of chemistry between its core leads as the biggest causes for concern.

Strong digital viewing figures and a relatively vocal social media following were enough to warrant The Shannara Chronicles season 2, but will the show be able to win over those early critics? Either way, to get you stoked for the second season, you can check out Mitchel Broussard’s impassioned defence of MTV’s ludicrous, cheesy, and really rather brilliant mess.
