‘My Adventures With Superman’ release window, cast, plot, and more

Supes is heading back to the world of animated TV.

We’ve got no shortage of Superman-shaped entertainment right now. On top of The CW’s Superman & Lois, which is currently airing its third season with a fourth believed to be on the way, James Gunn is famously working on a movie reboot titled Superman: Legacy to arrive in summer 2025. Before that gets here, though, another fresh take on the Last Son of Krypton will come our way in the form of new animated series My Adventures With Superman.

Superman has a long and illustrious history of animated adaptations, going all the way back to the acclaimed Max Fleischer-produced shorts of the 1940s and including the popular DC Animated Universe of the 1990s and 2000s. This latest two-dimensional interpretation of the Big Blue Boy Scout has some big (red) boots to fill, then, but from what we know about it so far, the show has a good shot at being yet another high-quality small-screen outing for the daddy of DC.

What’s My Adventures With Superman about?

There are so many Superman movies and TV shows out there that each new one that comes along needs a new hook to inspire viewers to give it a shot, and in the case of My Adventures With Superman the premise is that it’ll focus more on the Clark Kent side of his persona. The series focuses on the hero building his career at The Daily Planet alongside love interest Lois Lane while just starting out protecting Metropolis as the Man of Steel.

Here’s how the official synopsis has it:

“In this serialized coming-of-age story, we follow Clark as he builds his secret Superman identity and embraces his role as the hero of Metropolis and perhaps the world. Lois, now growing into a star investigative journalist, takes aspiring photographer Jimmy Olsen under her wing. All the while, Clark and Lois are falling in love, sharing adventures, taking down bad guys, stumbling over secrets, and discovering what it means to be Superman and Lois Lane.”

All in all, My Adventures sounds like a refreshing coming-of-age and romcom-flavored intepretation of the Superman mythos, perhaps with a dash of workplace comedy thrown in. In that way, it’s somewhat reminiscent of Lois & Clark or the latter seasons of Smallville, but it’s certainly different from the recent Superman movies.

Who’s playing Superman, Lois Lane, and company?

Jack Quaid might be the only one of The Boys without superpowers, but in My Adventures With Superman he’s playing the most powerful supe of them all. The Scream star is appearing in the title role as Kal-El, marking his second time voicing a DC character after his role as the villainous Alberto Falcone in the two-part Batman: The Long Halloween film adaptation. Appearing opposite him as the world’s greatest investigative reporter Lois Lane is Alice Lee, most known from Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

Other cast members confirmed to date include Kiana Madeira (Fear Street) as Clark’s Kryptonian cousin Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Jeannie Tirado (Soul) as his high-school sweetheart Lana Lang, Michael Yurchak (The Christmas Chronicles) as classic comics villain Winslow Schott/Toyman, and Azuri Hardy-Jones as Flip, presumably an original character for TV. Curiously, who’s playing Jimmy Olsen has yet to be announced.

Where and when can we expect to see it?

First announced back in 2021, My Adventures With Superman appeared to have gone the way of many promising HBO Max series and been quietly ditched, so it was a pleasant surprise when the Warner Bros. Animation announced it was still releasing after all this spring.

The only change is that it will not be arriving via HBO Max (soon to be rebranded as simply Max) as originally intended but will instead air on Cartoon Network during its Adult Swim late-night primetime programming. Encore airings will be shown on Toonami.

A specific release date has yet to be provided at the time of writing, but it has been confirmed that My Adventures With Superman — as created by Jake Wyatt (Steven Universe, DuckTales) — will be swooping down from the skies to our screens sometime in late 2023.
