Obviously, nobody has a monopoly on Norse mythology when the figures of legend are there for anyone to use however they see fit, but it’s nonetheless a curious coincidence that The Sandman is casting the roles of Thor, Loki, and Odin for season 2, based entirely on the trio’s respective importance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The streaming service does love itself a bit of Nordic folklore, to be fair, with Ragnarok returning for its third and final season next month at the same time Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods finally appears to be gathering some real momentum, but you can guarantee the Marvel vs. DC discourse will ignite all over again when the sophomore season of the acclaimed Neil Gaiman adaptation arrives.
Shooting has only just kicked off, though, but What’s on Netflix has already secured a description for The Sandman‘s Thor, and suffice to say; the series is heading in the complete opposite direction to Chris Hemsworth’s longtime MCU stalwart.
“The Norse Storm God. His hair and beard are unkempt, his body is a mountain, and his voice is thunder. He carries his hammer, Mjollnir, with which he’ll happily threaten anyone in his path. Thor is brusque, rude, quick to anger, and is always game for a f*ck or a fight.”
As well as the ruler of Asgard and his two sons, The Sandman has also sent out casting calls for King Auberon and Queen Titania, so anyone who thought the opening stretch was a little light on deities – which surely can’t be a single soul – will be thrilled to know there are countless more on the way.
