Some day, the world will look back to when we considered live-action content to be superior to animation in every way, and have a hearty chuckle at how foolish we were. And with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse breaking the ceilings as it is, perhaps that day will arrive sooner than we think.
One such advantage of hand-drawn animation, particularly such animation depicting high-octane genre fiction stories, is that no one can complain about lackluster CGI, since no CGI is involved in the first place. And apparently, the folks behind the MonsterVerse saw this strength and decided to give it a whirl with Skull Island, the incoming animated series coming to Netflix later this month. Indeed, judging by the number of jaw-dropping behemoths present in this new trailer, we reckon they’re having a lot of fun not relying on budget-sapping CGI effects.
The series follows the plight of Charlie and Mike, two explorers who wind up shipwrecked on a mysterious island while trying to rescue a girl named Annie. After getting attacked by giant crabs, giant snakes, giant predatory birds, giant… well, you get the idea, it doesn’t take long before they recognize their new environment as Skull Island, home to King Kong, one of the most feared kaiju of all time.
Written and directed by showrunner Brian Duffield (Love and Monsters), the series’ voice cast includes Nicolas Cantu, Darren Barnet, Benjamin Bratt, Betty Gilpin, and Mae Whitman as the voice of Annie.
Skull Island will release exclusively to Netflix on June 22 and will consist of eight episodes.
