Oblivious ‘Star Wars’ fan asks for Cara Dune gift ideas and gets a Gina Carano-shaped awakening

A Reddit user asked for gift ideas based on 'Star Wars' space-cop Cara Dune and learned about why she entered an early carbonite retirement.

Spanning dozens upon dozens of films, books, comics, video games and TV shows over nearly 50 years, the galaxy far, far away of Star Wars is chock-full of characters of all shapes, sizes, and species.

The recent spate of Disney Plus original series’ has highlighted many fan-favorite characters, both from the Original Trilogy and beyond, often to great effect. Not every character is so beloved, though, as Reddit user u/LtAlana learned when they accidentally opened a can of space worms asking for gift ideas about the rough and tough former space cop turned mercenary turned space cop again Cara Dune — their friend’s favorite character.

Gina Carano, the actor behind Dune, was primed for her own series after becoming a fan favorite in The Mandalorian. Badass, crude, and no-nonsense, Dune was a refreshing change of pace for female Star Wars characters. She helped Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) — the titular Mandalorian — defend a farming village, destroying an AT-ST in the process, protected Grogu from bounty hunters, and eventually became the Marshal of the lawless Nevarro. Not only was Dune interesting enough to be someone’s favorite character, but Disney liked her enough to develop Rangers of the New Republic, an entire show dedicated to her.

We all know by now, of course, that everything sort of fell apart the moment Carano opened up about her questionable political beliefs. Fortunately, fans more in the know about Carano’s Star Wars career (or now lack thereof) were quick to loop the OP in about the potentially problematic gift.

Props to u/LtAlana, who listened sincerely to the comments on the thread and researched Carano’s behavior before concluding that they “might stay away from Cara Dune themed gifts. Probably for the best.”
