Petition To Remake Game Of Thrones Season 8 Hits 1 Million Signatures

If you thought Game of Thrones fans couldn't get any more vocal about how much they dislike the final season of the show, think again. Remember the Change.org petition that was started a few days ago to get season 8 remade? Bet you didn't think it would reach its goal of 1 million signatures, did you?

If you thought Game of Thrones fans couldn’t get any more vocal about how much they dislike the final season of the show, think again. Remember the Change.org petition that was started a few days ago to get season 8 remade? Bet you didn’t think it would reach its goal of 1 million signatures, did you?

Well, it did.

It’s extremely unlikely that the season will get a do-over, but the petition has and will continue to serve its purpose. It’s letting the showrunners know just how craptastic fans think the ending really is. With a title as in-your-face as “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers,” the petition states that without any source material, the writers are “woefully incompetent.”

The signature drive has been hitting every goal our fellow Throney, Dylan D., has set for it to date, too. 500k, then 1 million, and now, he’s set it at 1.5 million, and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if it hits that as well. And soon.

Of course, it hasn’t been without backlash; social media users have expressed how childish the petition is and that it’ll never get the final season remade. It doesn’t take a smart little bookworm like Samwell Tarly to figure out that may not have been the point of the petition, though. Instead, it was simply one fan with one goal; to let the writers of the show know how unhappy the viewers are.

In fact, Dylan actually posted an update on May 17th stating precisely that:

“As this petition approaches (EDIT: surpasses!) a million signatures, I figured I should give a real update and explanation . . . I don’t think people can reasonably expect HBO to completely remake the season, or any part of this particular series (keep in mind the prequel spinoffs). It costs a fortune to shoot one episode, and I think most signers understand that. Will HBO lose gobs of money over this? Eh probably not. As Heath Ledger’s Joker once said, ‘It’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message.’ And I think this message is one of frustration and disappointment at its core.”

He then ends his update with these words, which sum things up quite nicely:

“Thank you to everyone for signing this silly thing. I will post another update if something tangible happens.”

Despite all the criticism, and the silly criticizing of that criticism, Game of Thrones has posted record numbers all season. No doubt, the series finale this weekend will continue those trends and whether or not it’s a satisfying one, it’ll surely give us all even more to talk about in the coming weeks.
