Pretty Little Liars Review: “Turn Of The Shoe” (Season 4, Episode 2)

Events were unceremoniously calm on this episode of Pretty Little Liars. It was almost to the point where you could take everything in without having to wonder if you caught all the details, and it certainly worked.

When the Liars figured out the RV was gone, it only made Mona look more guilty. It’s a good thing the Liars didn’t all come in one car, or Mona’s might have been the next funeral they attended. It looks like ‘A’ is content having Mona walk a fine line – she’s not totally in with the Liars, but she’s not completely on their bad side. When this is all over, maybe her and Hannah (Ashley Benson) will actually be friends again. ‘A’ is certainly pushing them to co-exist as of late – of course, she did presumably try to have Mona killed too.

Emily wanted nothing more than to pretend everything was fine, but the experience had a different effect entirely on Aria. She has finally decided to be proactive and learn to defend herself. Aria has been convinced for a while that she was the weakest link because she was the smallest, and now she’s ready to do something to prove ‘A’ wrong. Enter hot karate teacher. We don’t know much about Jake (Ryan Guzman) yet, except that he has some martial arts skills and is easy on the eyes, but he’s sure to play a pretty big role this season as Aria’s new love interest.

Aria and Ezra (Ian Harding) have represented consistency on the show for the first 3 seasons and now that they’ve gone their separate ways, it’s shaken things up. Ezra is back at the high school teaching English, and Aria is once again his student. They may have agreed to see other people, but this level of familiarity doesn’t just go away. It’ll be interesting to see his reaction when he lays eyes on Aria and Jake. Let’s just hope he’s secure in his manhood.

Another couple we may soon be saying adios to is Hannah and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn). We already know that Blackburn will be moving to the Pretty Little Liars spin-off show, Ravenswood, later this season. Caleb has yet to make an appearance this season which isn’t a good sign, but he’s sure to show up fashionably late to share a dramatic goodbye scene with Hannah. It’s possible that the two lovebirds will keep up their long distance relationship, but I wouldn’t hold your breathe.

Speaking of birds, who would have thought that the next key piece of information would come from a parrot? And, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) figuring out that she was mimicking the sound of a phone number being dialed – UPenn should fictitiously be kicking themselves. The creepiest part of this episode of Pretty Little Liars was definitely someone being in the house while the girls were downstairs, letting the bird out, opening the window, and leaving, all without anyone noticing. Perhaps the Liars should consider being more alert in the future.

What would Rosewood look like without Mona? And, why is Mrs. DiLaurentis really back in town? The creep factors continue. Let us know in the comment section below what you think we’re in store for on the next episode of Pretty Little Liars!

 Until next episode.
