Supernatural Season 14 Will Pay Tribute To ’80s Slasher Films

These days, Supernatural has more so become reliant on its own ever-expanding mythology, but what originally attracted me to the horror series during its earliest of seasons was how it took influence from cultural folklore and urban legends. Being someone who grew up on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Unsolved Mysteries, it was only natural that I became hooked on Sam and Dean Winchester's adventures.

So, even though it’ll take some time before Dean shakes Apocalypse World’s Michael from his body, we’ll eventually get back to business as usual in some sense. And from the sound of it, those of you who’ve stuck around for as long as I have will get to enjoy a throwback to the good old days.

While recently speaking with TV Line, executive producer and co-showrunner Andrew Dabb teased what’s to come by saying the following:

“Sam and Dean and our whole crew get involved in our homage to ’80s slasher movies. We’ve got some really cool gory stuff planned for that.”

To be more specific, this’ll go down in episode 4, so it sounds like Dean should get back to scarfing down bacon cheeseburgers at least a week before that. Still, one can’t help but wonder how classics like Halloween and Friday the 13th may provide influence.

Actually, what you may not know is that Jason Voorhees very nearly made a cameo all the way back in season 3 – albeit in a dream sequence – but the writers strike put the kibosh on that. Funny enough, series lead Jared Padalecki went on to star in 2009’s Friday the 13th remake, so at least it worked out in the end in some fashion.

Supernatural returns for its fourteenth season on Thursday, October 11 on The CW. In the meantime, be sure to check out our review for season 13’s Blu-ray set.
