The Flash Season 5×21 Synopsis Teases A Metahuman Extinction

Now that a time travelling adult Grace Gibbons has taken over as big bad on The Flash, I'm oddly thrilled to learn she's being referred to as what I'd been calling her following the big reveal, that being "Cicada II." Hey, it's obvious but it works.

For the time being, it appears as though Cicada II has been put on the back burner so that the situation involving Nora West-Allen and Eobard Thawne be fully explored – not to mention the return of the Icicle coming tomorrow night – but we can expect for Grace to resurface in season 5’s penultimate episode at the very latest. Suffice it to say, this has been confirmed by the official synopsis:

CICADA II MAKES HER MOVE – Team Flash is on high alert after Cicada II (guest star Sarah Carter) threatens to unleash a dangerous virus that would put all meta-humans at risk. Stefan Pleszczynski directed the episode written by Judalina Neira & Thomas Pound (#521). Original airdate 5/7/2019.

If I were to hazard an educated guess, then I’d say that this “dangerous virus that would put all meta-humans at risk” could very well be a weaponized version of the cure developed by Cisco Ramon and Caitlin Snow. We can’t rule out Grace having extracted a sample from her uncle at some point, and it was only a matter of time that such an X-Men: The Last Stand-esque scenario came to fruition.

To think that all beings with powers will be wiped out is kind of silly, but we can’t rule out Cicada II racking up an impressive body count before the Scarlet Speedster and his pals save the day. After all, many metahumans were created on the night of the Enlightenment, so there’s room for random baristas with extraordinary abilities to hit the floor in a grisly montage.

The Flash airs on Tuesday nights on The CW, with “The Girl with the Red Lightning” set to debut on May 7th.
