Though we may still be waiting for Kevin Smith to further extend his tendrils out into the Arrowverse, one has to admit that he’s directed some mighty fine episodes of both The Flash and Supergirl to date. Of those, it’s become apparent that he likes to focus on character and emotion, but he’s still left room for some epic science fiction sequences.

Well, as it turns out, Smith has booked a return trip to Central City that just so happens to coincide with the end of the Scarlet Speedster’s latest hiatus (I know, we’re all getting tired of the breaks). And in that, we know not only to expect for him and Jason Mewes to get in front of the camera for a brief period, but also some memorable guest appearances to be made by heroes and villains as well.

Here’s what the official synopsis for “Null and Annoyed” lets us know:

Barry (Grant Gustin) and Ralph (guest star Hartley Sawyer) take different approaches to finding the remaining bus metas before DeVoe gets to them. However, Ralph’s cavalier attitude frustrates Barry and the two clash over what it means to be a hero. Meanwhile, Breacher (guest star Danny Trejo) returns to ask Cisco (Carlos Valdes) for a favor. Kevin Smith directed the episode written by Lauren Certo & Kristen Kim.

Based on that, we’re reaffirmed Smith will continue focusing on interpersonal dynamics between various characters, with Barry and Ralph butting heads, and the latest chapter in the saga chronicling Cisco and Breacher’s complicated relationship.

Still, it’s hard to ignore that the villain of the week, Null, isn’t mentioned at all, even if the episode in question is named for her. Perhaps this was just an oversight, but one can only hope that she’s more than just a plot device. After all, she’s one of three remaining people on DeVoe’s hit list.

The Flash returns with new episodes on Tuesday, April 10 on The CW.
